Couldn't agree with you more, Starpoint Gemini is a watered down version of Darkstar One which is a watered down version of Freelancer which is a watered down version of Wing Commander: Privateer.

X3 is more of an economy simulator (in space), if you want combat look elsewhere.

That's pretty much on the money. If you're usually into the action/sandbox part you may like it, but that's about all it has to offer.

I beg to differ on this one - X3's combat can be quite fun (especially in Terran Conflict and Albion Prelude, where the enemy ship boarding mechanic has been further refined). But yes, to get there you kind of need to build your own economy and that puts a lot of people down, whereas to others it's pure gold.
