I joined GOG today and bought Torchlight 2. When I tried to start the game download, it seems I first had to download/install GOG Galaxy first, so I did that.

Next, the window had me download the "GOG_Galaxy_Torchlight_II.exe" file, which I assume actually starts the game download &/or its installation, because when I clicked on it in my computer's "Downloads" folder, a window with an "INSTALL" button popped up. That's where I ran into a problem.

Almost as soon as I clicked on the "INSTALL" button, the install ended, and a message popped up saying "server problem". For the next 3 hours, the same thing happened every time I tried the "INSTALL" button again.

I'm wondering if my ISP might be part (or all) of the problem. Where I live will never get DSL or Cable. So my only alternative for Internet service for my desktop computer is satellite dish. (Because of its slow download/upload speeds, it always fails latency tests.) I have 16 GB of RAM, so that shouldn't be the problem.

Does GOG require a minimum upload speed before it will upload/install a game on my computer? If so, I may never be able to buy & install a game from GOG again, and just wasted my money on Torchlight 2.

To ussnorway: Thanks for the fast reply. Yes, except for not having broadband for playing online, I have way more than even all the recommended system requirements on my W-7.

Your attached image was a big help. It got me thinking that it looked familiar, similar to the screen that popped up after I finished paying for the game. Only I ignored the "crap internet" section because there was only one button to push, so it seemed obvious what to do next. Push the button, right?

So my thinking got me searching for "offline downloading or installing". Strangely, it didn't give me any helpful results from forum posts, so I searched for other possibilities among the menu bar options...and discovered "Downloads" under the "Support" menu option, and checked it out. That's where I finally came across "offline installer" instructions.

To be honest, those instructions would not have helped me much even if I had found them before I had pushed the button, because I had no idea that the GOG Galaxy method wouldn't work for me until I tried it and it failed.

And also, the term "offline installer" is really a misnomer, because you still have to be online in order to use it. Not sure what would be an appropriate name for it though. Slow-computer installer, maybe?

Anyway, once I understood how to find and download the "offline installer", I said an "ut oh". Because if the download volume of the files that needed to be downloaded was just for the "offline installer", and the volume of downloading/installing the game itself was an additional volume, it was going to take a big chunk out of my monthly data allowance. Which is only 9 GB a month, & the month just started 2 days ago!

Well, I've been desperate for a new game to play for several weeks now, so somehow I stumbled across my "Library" (not sure how I found it) and I did it anyway, & discovered that the volume as shown was actually the game. Unfortunately, I had to download it twice anyway. As soon as the download finished, I hit the arrow to open the menu options where I open the downloaded folder. But I had clicked a moment too soon, because there was a slight hesitation. And I guess that somehow the "Cancel" option got clicked on, cancelling the whole download, and started it over!

So for anyone else who is reading this and learning all this for the first time, be sure to give the download an extra moment to finish, and be sure to stay well clear of that "Cancel" option!

Anyway, when it was all done installing, I wanted to try out the game to make sure that it was really going to work. And wouldn't you know it, I got so wrapped up in it that I didn't stop until I was level six! LOL So I'm a little late in replying to your helpful post. And I've marked your post as Solution Found! **thumbs up with a smile**

Thanks a bunch! And the game is so enjoyable so far that it might even keep me offline enough to keep me from exceeding this month's data allowance. (With fingers crossed that I don't get any giant Windows updates.)

No, that shouldn't be the case. These installers are really supposed to work offline.

To clarry: Okay, but I'm finding it impossible to imagine how I could possibly download a game from the Internet if I'm not connected to the Internet.

Also, where on my computer would I find the means to do it?

You have to be online in order to download it. Installing does not require an online connection at all.

One can go to a place that provides internet access (work, library, mall?), download the installer, transport it home, and use it offline.

Just as I can go to a place that provides gasoline, put it in a canister, transport it home, and then use it in my lawn mower.

To clarry: I beg to differ. The gas runs the mower, but it's the mower that's mowing the grass...thus lawn mower. And have you ever heard of a manual push mower? It has no motor. The blades turn manually as you push it. I may be showing my age, but that's the first kind of lawn mower I used on the lawn where I grew up. But I do see your point. Thanks.

To InkPanther: Okay, I got it now. I was assuming that the "offline installer" was doing everything, because I couldn't even begin the download until I used the "offline installer" instruction sequence. Thanks.

They are referred to as "offline installers" or "standalone installers" because after you have downloaded the installer files, you don't have to be online anymore in order to install (or play) the game.

So after you have downloaded those installer files to your hard drive, you can e.g. copy them into an USB memory stick, move to another Windows computer of yours which is not even connected to internet, and install (and play) the game there too.

Of course after you have installed the game, you are free to delete the offline installer files from your hard drive, if you don't have space to keep them archived. You can later download them again if needed. But, if you have crap internet, it might be nice to keep them on your hard drive so you can easily re-install the game later, without having to re-download the files.

I guess it is a bit confusing to new users as GOG offers two ways to download and install your games (the offline installers, or installing the game with Galaxy). GOG clearly wants their customers to use Galaxy, and I guess many people prefer it as it does give some extra ease of use (auto-update, cloud saves etc.) and features (achievements, multiplayer support etc.).

Anyway, GOG offers also the offline installers because they know many of their customers prefer them, me included. I just like the idea that I can keep the downloaded game and reinstall the game as many times as I want, even in the event that the GOG service and store didn't exist anymore. So the game has no umbilical cord to the store from which I bought it, and that's the way I like it. After all, I don't have an umbilical cord to my mother either which is fortunate as she passed away several years ago already.

To timppu: Yes, I've already saved the download, just in case. Not only because of my crap Internet connection, but also because of the limit on my monthly download/upload data allowance.

And it is sooo nice to have a means to reinstall a game that I enjoy playing, even if the web site it came from crashes or disappears.

the off line installer is designed to run on low bandwith internet i.e, if your end keeps dropping out then the download should restart from last point and NOT have to start again at the zero marker

you also need to understand that off line versons of the games are NOT compatible with Galaxy... it breaks the game files up into smaller chunks for download and put them back together at your end so for example a Galaxy verson game can not be patched with the off line verson patch

anyway you are up and gaming so thats great mate... enjoy the game
