Lucumo: Just some HD port for graphic whores, who cares? New Sakura Taisen game and maybe, actually a proper Mega Drive Mini is way better news.
Making these two games available is a pretty big deal. If someone wants to play these games they have to go out of the way and pick up hardware, accessories and expensive copies of the games to play. Now you can buy a copy for $30 and play it on modern platforms.
In case it hasn't already been shared, from r/games

"Shenmue I & II HD will retail for $29.99 on all platforms, will feature achievements"

Coming soon to a not DRM-free store close to you with juicy Denuvo DRM, of course!

And achievements. Because that matters more than whether a game is DRM-free.

Enebias: Honest question: what makes Shenmue so great?
From the little I have seen (I have not played it, so it is just an impression) I cannot see anything special, still lots of people praise it to no end.
So ahead of its time it ain't even funny. We're talking System Shock levels of ahead of its time. I know for a fact people are still buying Dreamcast consoles on ebay for no purpose other than playing this game.

On top of the gameplay innovations, this had siiiiiiiiiick graphics for its time. It's a 1999 game and - lo-res console resolution aside - it might as well be a mid-2000s game.

This would be an instabuy on gog.

SCPM: Voted. :) Since Deep Silver / THQ is publishing Shenmue 3, I wonder if we could end up in some weird situation where Shenmue 3 is on GOG, but the first 2 are not. =\

Chacranajxy: Yeah, that was my thought, because I know the devs of 3 have said they're open to releasing the game DRM-free.
To me, any Shenmue on GOG would be good. I emailed the company asking if Shenmue 3 would come to DRM-free GOG and got only an "we are evaluating our options" reply.
Thanks for the news, Lucian_Galca.
I have waited 18~ years to play Shenmue, I'm ready to be sorely disappointed by all the hype that has been built up since the late 90's.

I should have bought a Dreamcast back then I guess, great library of games despite short lifespan.
I was honestly more enthralled by Defender of the Future, but I can see the love for the game.

Crosmando: From what I remember of it, it was like an immersive "life simulator" where you can go to bed in your house, wake up, go explore the entire city at will. That said, I only played it briefly and a loooong time ago.
Yup exactly this from what I remember as well. Always thought the premise was interesting and unique. Always wanted to give it a shot. I don't think it will be "as big a deal now" as a lot of games incorporate these types of features but still excited at the prospect of a remake.

I can't remember why I didn't give the sequel a shot, as I'm pretty sure it released on the original XBox. If they end up here I might finally get a chance to try them.

I like the idea of bringing games back for a second go around. There's of course the risk of upsetting what made the originals so great but frankly giving new gamers a chance to go back and play classics or those "special" games they might have missed is never a bad thing.
I always heard about how these games were so good but I never played them, I'm happy they brought them back alive from the Forgotten Franchises Limbo.

I've played both when they were originally released. 1 on the Dreamcast, and 2 when it came to Original Xbox.

Alot of Shenmue 1 is chasing leads to the plot, don't expect a huge amount of martial arts action. Shenmue 2 on the other hand has alot more action and is the better game imo. I think 1 got a bit criticized for not having much action so they corrected that in 2 by re-balancing the action to plot ratio. That's not to say Shenmue 1 is a bad game, in fact it's good, just don't go into 1 expecting to get into fights right off the bat.

I think the best way to describe the Shenmue series would be martial arts action meets old school point and click adventure game, just without a mouse pointer lol. Quite an immersive world with various destractions from the plot too as described in earlier posts.

Hence my "maybe, actually a proper"...which was warranted. We didn't know it was from AtGames at the time.
Considering Shenmue 2 costs a ridiculous amount of money on Ebay (Last time I checked it was around £60), I'm glad we're getting this HD Remake. Still many other dreamcast games that need a rerelease: Powerstone 2, Skies of Arcadia, Phantasy Star Online etc
Phantasy Star Online doesn't need a remake, it is still online ;)
