Because apparently the basic blaster lasers the ships use in these games are limited ammo. And in all my missions I run out of energy to fire more lasers.

So how am I supposed to recharge my energy to fire my blasters again in this game?

I assume I am supposed to dock into a friendly warship or something so they can repair my damages and recharge my weapons and shields and stuff like that, but so far I have not seen the option to do it.

Your Shields, lasers, and engine have to share 100% of the energy in your ship.

You set lasers and Shields, engine gets what's left.

F9 changes laser recharge rate, F10 changes Shields recharge rate.

If You need speed, drop the lasers and or shields.

50% is enough to hold current energy, 75% is a slow add, 100% is a fast add, 25% is a slow bleed and 0% is a fast drop.

You need to increase the recharge rate for your cannons by pressing F9. You can press F9 to increase the recharge rate once or press F9 a second time to set the recharge rate to maximum. The downside to increasing the weapon recharge rate, however, is that the energy will come from the engines, so your maximum speed goes down.

When you start a mission, your engine, shield and weapon energy levels are at neutral. Part of playing the games in this series is to learn to manage your energy levels. You need to be able to judge when you need more speed or more firepower in a given situation. And you need to know when to divert weapon energy to your shields (Shift+F10).

So its all about Energy Conservation and when to switch between the things?

Is there energy regeneration in this where if I lower shields, blasters, and speed, it recharges?

I see. Does the same apply to the Wing Commander games as well?

I have a Flightstick in hand here to play these games properly. But to me the real challenge is mastering and memorizing every control and keybinding in this game. I mean there are prompts that require me to press Shift-Keybutton.

IIRC, Wing Commander 3 at least gave you the option to customize your energy distribution levels, but it was not as necessary as it is in the X-Wing series. Not sure about Wing Commander IV, but WC 1+2 didn't have this feature.

I can only recommend that you play the combat training missions in Tie-Fighter. Those should give you all the info you need. The rest is all about developing a feel for your ships and how to manage them correctly.

The combination Shift+F10 is IMO vital, as you can transfer partial energy from your weapons to your shields. This, in combination with a high weapon recharge rate, can really save your neck when you're in a pinch.

Your engines generate the energy, so if you set lasers to max recharge rate they will recharge until completely recharged, same for shields (F10) (if the craft is equipped with them, most TIE series fighters are not minus 2 of them) (all rebel craft have shields) but when you take energy from the engines your speed is affected, its up to you to decide what energy needs you have in the given moment, you can transfer energy from shields to lasers and vice versa I forget which key does this sadly. The only reloading you have to do is for your warhead launchers and this is accomplished via a special craft that will launch from your mothership, this will usually be stated either in the mission briefing or by the briefing officer if you talk to him (at least in TIE Fighter)

Wing Commander is similar but there are differences I cannot recall at the moment as I played XW and TF more.

I can vouch for playing the training missions, then combat training, then the campaign (TIE Fighter). You're not really ready to face true combat situations until you have learned the the myriad features each combat craft has on offer. Shunting and charging beam / laser / ion cannon weapon and shield systems are very basic level skill sets and integral to all combat. When it comes to warheads, they will not refill. Some missions will offer warhead resupply via craft which will dock with you (shuttles or tugs etc), but such maneuvers are risky to perform, and the limited number of resupplies tend to disappear entirely when the support craft are destroyed. Do not "dock" in stations or capital ships thinking you will resupply. You will be in effect ending the mission.

Start simple and master the standard TIE Fighter first to learn basic cannon use. Then move to something like the Assault Gunboat to learn shielding and shunting power between systems. The TIE Bomber will give your some basic missile skills. Stay clear of other technology like tractor beams until you can handle the other basics first.
