You should be more concerned about people being forced into the army because there aren't any other jobs or opportunities for large numbers of people.

While I'm technically a veteran from nearly 2 decades ago, I never really took this day to heart. It's not like I fought in any wars or anything; mostly just boredom. ;) Uh? Wha? Okay then. Aren't you a ray of sunshine? Not everyone fulfilled their duty due to patriotism. I certainly didn't and I was still part of the whole Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom nonsense.

I do agree that some people's glorification of military personnel borders on the absurd with all the "hero" crap being thrown around. What's funny is that most that have served don't really enjoy that kind of false praise.

Look, don't get me wrong, I have no intention of denigrating US servicemen (at least the vast majority of them) as war criminals or something of the sort, and I can respect it when people joined the military out of patriotism after 9/11 (I still think the Afghan war was justified in its origins). Caring for veterans' interests in matters like help with disabilities, ptsd etc. is commendable, if used for that veterans' day is fine. If it's used to glorify every military intervention the US has entered by choice in the last few decades and pretend it should be beyond questioning, not so much imo.
And that's it from me about this topic...previous commenter is right, probably violates the "no politics" rule.

The "Thank your for your service" part in Curb your Enthusiasm pokes fun at this.

I think the "...choosing to sacrifice your time to protect your country's interests" is worthy of a more in-depth analysis. Elsewhere, since the place here gets heated fast and things will start going horribly wrong very very soon, and I am talking as a massive detractor of American Foreign Affairs politics since they became independent.

I think almost every army ever created has -- under faulty leadership or corrupt politicians -- ended up doing something questionable at some point -- large or small (there really is enough blame to go around) -- but...

... politics aside...

It depends on who the "others" are. Oh, mind me, I believe most military are just misguided, they really believe they're doing good. If they knew what was really behind their actions, I doubt they'd keep on serving.

This post was about celebrating people who gave a portion of their lives to make the lives of others better. It wasn't about America or any silliness or anything specific. Certainly, today is an American holiday, but it was more a reminder to just be nice to other people.

So thanks for turning this on its head for those who can't resist taking a stab at America, the foreign policies of such or anything. Instead of saying "Thank you" to a serviceman, no matter your country, or at the least saying nothing, you choose to try and shit on something as simple as wanting to thank someone.

I am not brainwashed with the mainstream media military worship and I see right through the whole charade.

If you actually cared about american veterans, you would help them stop being homeless and broke and actually get them jobs and a house to stay in.

The first step is recognition. The second step is action. But we agree... if honoring veterans is important to you, act. Do something.

Respecting and recognizing that others are out there sacrificing for you and I shouldn't be a point of contention. Politics is secondary to this reality. You can argue the politics and the political motives at the top, but not the individual sacrifice... unless we are so entitled and arrogant to think that we are protected by simply existing?

Sorry, that's not believable, you can save those "It's just about honoring people who have served their country, no matter where they are" claims. In the current international climate something like this is bound to be political.
Would you extend your good wishes to members of the Iranian military because they served the interests of their country so well when they shot down that American drone? I doubt you would. So don't pretend this isn't about your particular patriotism which should be kept out of an international gaming forum.
