Zimerius: well you can change your dpi settings of course but the catch is, with even more finer movements the risk for RSI increases a ten fold, then you absolutely need to use a training hand pincher every day!
( this of course depends on day activities, shape, build and many more circumstances )
That won't work for me in most games I'm playing. I play a lot of games with first person perspective. Stealth, shooter, survival, RPGs... And I almost always play them 'sneaky'. The problem: I get pretty immersed and I'm one of those guys who gets jump scared by the tiniest things. High dpi means my character does a 720° turn every time I poop my pants xP

I have a Logitech mouse with some extra buttons. I tried switching dpi "on the fly", depending on what I need. I'm too stupid for that... Now I have a dpi/sensivity setting I can live with and have one button set to very low dpi when I keep it pressed. Helps with sniping (and with older games that are sometimes very sensitive in menus).

Sometimes I think about switching to a trackball, but... well... My mouse is still good ;)

Sarafan: This doesn't happen to me. Of course I had a few auto-missclicks in the past, but it's not something regular nor frequent. It's interesting however that you keep your middle finger on the right mouse button. I always keep it on the mouse wheel. Not that it matters when it comes to auto-missclicking, but I can't imagine keeping the middle finger on the right mouse button. :)
Interesting, I always use my left index finger for the mousewheel, as in I move it left mouse button => mousewheel whenever I want to scroll. I just tried your configuration, and it feels very weird. A bit more comfortable though, perhaps I should give it a go :)

heh! though recognizable, i switched to a controller for those games and, while my aim is much worse after several years of trying i find it more ' relax' and scare proof to use a controller

Matewis: I haven't seen or noticed a trackball yet, but what I'll look out for are stores with desktops/laptops set up. There is a small chance (I hope) that any of these might have a trackball plugged in rather than a mouse.
Maybe you'd get lucky.

But also beware of sticker shock since it appears that everything is currently 10$ higher than it normally should be.

Right now, I've got a scroll ring, which basically means my index finger rests up on middle click, my thumb rests on left, and my middle and ring finger (+optionally thumb) do the scrolling.

I had a few attempts over the years to switch to holding middle finger on wheel instead of moving index between LMB and wheel. Never could, just won't work. But I also use middle click a lot and the wheel is obviously harder to click (otherwise misclicks on scrolling would be the norm) and I have less strength in middle finger compared to index, so that likely has much to do with it too.

A bit pricey for the time being (need some other hardware first), but that does look like it would be very comfortable. I'm definitely going to be on the lookout for now on

Oh, I managed to phantom-click the middle mouse every now and again regardless, even with my weaker middle finger :) It's especially annoying when I accidentally close browser tabs this way.

I do occasionally accidentally click on the right mouse button in a heat of a battle in Team Fortress 2, which in the case of e.g. being an engineer may mean you pick up your sentry gun, when I was supposed to fire it... Very annoying.

Darvond: I'd say it works quite well for RTS games. The range of motion is more than versatile enough since it uses an optical sensor anyway.

Yeah, you do have to clean the ball once every great while along with the sensing pit, but it's mostly just a dusting.
avatar
Matewis: I might have to try it then, so I'll be on the lookout for a demo setup in a store. The cleaning does remind me though of the caveman days of opening the underside of a mouse to clean the gunk picked up by the trackball ;)
I can attest to problem-free pointing with a trackball.

The best aspect is that the hand doesn't need to move in order to move the screen pointer, which reduces arm movements. (I initially opted for a trackball because I did not want to use a mousepad on the textile surface upon which I am supine.) The thumb moves the ball.

Yes, it needs a clean, especially if you apply hand creams.

See if you can manage to find one aftermarket or refurbished. Never overlook the possibilities of previous ownership.
No, sometimes when a game pulls an ugly one, my hand turns around and the middle finger goes straight.

.

.

But I guess that is not really what the OP asked about.

The other thing you should do is check your posture. I've learned from experience that a bad posture leads to back issues - which then impact your arms, right down to fingers. Basically, sit in the wrong position and you could quite easily be developing twitches and twinges. A bit of physio fixed me.

I'll keep that in mind thank you, though I have to say that I take a lot of pride in my posture generally ;) After all, as they say, a curvy spine is the devil's roller coaster.

:)) Good one. In my case that may happen with both hands at once :)
