What are your favorite Lord of the Rings video games?
Return of the King is a simple slasher but it's a lot of fun and feels as close to the movies as practically possible (it definitely needs to be considered as a movie tie-in, not compared to books).

Battle for Middle Earth was great, it looked pretty stunning back in the day, the gameplay was fun and had some nice original ideas that made it stand out from usual Warcraft clones.

speaking of which

War of the Ring is about as blatant a Warcraft clone as you can get, but if you don't mind that (or maybe even that's exactly what you're looking for) it's actually pretty good. Nice graphics, solid gameplay, and because it's not based on the movie license, it's interesting to see a slightly different aesthetic than the films. I love the films and how they look, but with ubiquitous that look became, it's all the more interesting to see different ones.
There are too many. I thought the final days mod for mount and blade was quite an achievement.the first shadows of Mordor was pretty good right up to halfway through when you have to do it all again. But heck, I remember playing text adventures back on spectrum. Far too many many to list.
The only ones I've played were those Interplay games from the early 1990s (the trilogy that was never finished). Wouldn't exactly call them favourites, they were quite deficient in many ways. Still interesting games though, too bad they aren't available on Gog.
I would have said Middle Earth: Shadows of Mordor, but it actually has next to no connection to the Lord of the Rings and is a better game if you ignore that its title is claiming otherwise. The story is rubbish but the gameplay is fun.

So I'd say Lord of the Rings: War in the North.

Neverwinter Nights once had a pretty nice Persistent World server called Untold Tales of Tolkien. That was cool too, especially the Hobbiton areas, but I think it's not live anymore.

Oh, and not quite LOTR, but The Hobbit was an enjoyable platformer / action adventure. Too bad there was no digital re-release on PC so far.

LEGO Lord Of The Rings and Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King.
The game boy advance tie-ins for the movies were very fun. I also like the Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War games.
The Hobbit text adventure from Melbourne House wasn't bad. The independent-minded characters could be frustrating, but the atmosphere was pretty solid.

Although I've stopped playing as many hack-n-slash action titles as I did in the past, LoTR Return of the King keeps coming up in "best" lists. I'll definitely give that a playthrough. Have The Two Towers around here as well.

Battle for Middle Earth II has been on my list to play for awhile. Heard there's a fan remaster in the works.

One thing I remember about the RotK game was that it actually did the Eowyn vs. Witch King scene better than the movie did in that it included the dialogue from the book instead of condensing it down to a Schwarzenegger one-liner as the filmmakers did.
Battle for Middle Earth 1 (not 2) is spectacular. It captures the magic of the Peter Jackson trilogy perfectly. Rohan and their cavalry charges never got old! It's only a pity that the graphics has aged a bit by now. There is, or at least has been an attempt to update the graphics however.

Well, I'm no purist. If a game is fun and doesn't 100% undermine Tolkien's work, I'm fine with it. Fan-fiction can be entertaining. Anyway...

... Shadow of Mordor is a great game. Shadow of War is good too... but... a bit too much of same. Still, worth having and playing. Have to chuckle when I see their Shelob. ha.

I loved War in the North. Still play it on PS3. Wish this new Dungeons & Dragons Dark Alliance game took a note from WitN and had ally AI.

Mentioning all of these makes me sad that licensed games often has accessibility issues in old age. Once that license expires, many of these games are removed from storefronts never to return. Sad... would be great to see some of these here on GOG

BfME 2 wasn't nearly as good as the first one. They pretty much ditched everything the first one did different than usual RTSes, and ended up with a decent but unremarkable one. The most interesting thing about it was how silly it got at times (you could summon Tom freaking Bombadil to wreck entire orc armies by dancing and singing).
LotR The Third Age is probably my favorite followed by Shadow of War and the SNES Fellowship of the Ring.

Having gotten into turn-based games recently, I've been looking out for LoTR The Third Age.

And with that said (no relation to turn-based games)...

I must confess -- a very unpopular opinion -- that I enjoy LoTR Conquest immensely... and I came to it solo, long after the servers were dead and Pandemic was shuttered. I played through solo and although it was a little clunky, I loved it. IMO it gets more hate than is deserved.

Thanks. Good to know!
