kai2: Wow. Thanks. Had never heard of that game before!

morolf: I can't really think of any tbh except the Fallout games, and I'm not the biggest fan of them (though they're ok).
The STALKER games have amazing atmosphere, but I'm not sure one could call them post-apocalyptic, after all the zone is only a limited territory, with the rest of the world unaffected.

kai2: Yeah, I think the Stalker games certainly work as post-apocalyptic. It has many elements just not the overall scope.

I'm interested in the first State of Decay game. Has anyone played that?
State of Decay is pretty fun, but I'd also recommend the original version over the YOSE edition. I'd also recommend maybe waiting on a sale. It's survival, but done in a sort of "light" way, with crafting/building elements, you can recruit more survivors, give them jobs around your base, explore the world for items, food, materials, do story stuff, etc.

It's solid, but it can be a lot of fun with multiple players, much like Dead Island.

Love State of Decay, but why do you recommend the original version over YOSE?
Not 100% post-apocalyptic (its more "during-apocalypse" or "1-second-after-apocalypse") in its themes, but Gothic 1, 2 and 3's story has a similar sense of atmopshere when it comes to the entire "impending doom all the time" aspect that makes the theme work in the first place. Especially Gothic 2's atmosphere where everything seems normal, though on another continent humankind is pretty much already destroyed and enslaved and where those ripple effects of humanity ceasing (or in parts already ceased) to exist can even be felt throughout the plot all of the time. I think its gets the job as done as Aquanox 1 and 2 does with its setting.

It hasn't been mentioned here but I think Spec Ops: The Line is kinda post-apocalyptic in the same vain the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games are. The world is mostly fine, but some parts are totally fucked.

YOSE is actually buggier than the original. If that's not an issue for the OP, then there's really no other reason.
All Fallout games
Metro 2033
STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl
ATOM RPG: Post-apocalyptic indie game
Wasteland 1 and 2
Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden
Rage 1 and 2

It's been a while since I played it but I don't recall any bugs in the YOSE. Anyway, I absolutely loved the game myself and it's probably the closest a game has come to the cinematic zombie experience. I hope the sequel eventually comes to Steam or GOG as I don't want to get it off the windows store.

Is the Wasteland series really good? I was reading on it the other day but have never played it.

The games are great. I wish the new Fallout games have the same bleak world feel that Wasteland games make us feel when you play
Wasteland
The Fallout games
Roadwar 2000
Autoduel
Cadillacs and Dinosaurs

There was a Cadilllacs & Dinosuars game!?!?!? Wow, I was a huge fan of the comic... even from the days when it was called Xenozoic Tales. Wow, gotta find this game! Thanks!!

[edit]

Ok, looked it up. While I love Cadilllacs & Dinosaurs, I'm not really a beat 'em up fighting game player. Still, thanks for the lead. I never knew a C&D game existed

There was another C&D game for... sega cd or the 3do... I forget. It was some sort of driving game.

As for the beat 'em up game... it's freaking awesome! It's one of the classic Capcom beat 'em ups that I adored as a kid. My personal favorite was Aliens vs Predator, based on an early script for the movie that would have likely been far better than the movie we eventually got.

Ah... here's the sega cd version:

Yeah, it's a really good beat-em-up game but it's kind of a weird fit for the license, like a lot of other 90s licensed games. Plus, I would have liked it even more if it was based directly on the comic instead of the cartoon.

It would be cool if they could revisit it for a different kind of game, maybe some kind of open-world adventure or something.
Have to say, I really enjoyed Dying Light: The Following after buying it here. Best to buy when it's on offer, though.

Wasn't overly keen on the parkour/freerunning to begin with, although once I got to grips with the gameplay mechanics, it turned out to be one of the most fun games I've played in a long time.

What's not to like about drop-kicking zombies off tall buildings...
