Although I would have worded it differently, I don’t get this superhero hype either. I did read comics when I was younger, sure, but even back then superheroes and superhero stories have never resonated with me. Everything that happened in there just felt too arbitrary and illogical (within the frame of suspension of disbelief, of course), so that I could never get emotionally invested in these stories and characters. I always could identify more with Donald and his lot, and their everyday problems and "mundane" adventures.

I don’t know how much all of this is a cultural thing and how much is just personal preference. Looking at Germany, I get the impression that those friends of mine that grew up in the western (American informed) part are way more into superheroes than my friends that originate from the eastern part. Would be interesting to hear the opinion from some younger German forum members that were born around or after 1990, how they relate to this whole thing. (My cousin’s kids that live next door are not into superheroes either, but they have never been great comic or movie afficionados anyway.)

It may be cultural. Look at some typical Central/Eastern European folk tales. In the majority of them the hero is a small man/woman who outwits a more menacing villain at their own game. There may be magic involved, but not of the planet-shattering kind. American superheroes are about bombastic feats of physical strength and flashy powers. I'm more likely to relate to the witty Everyman from Europe than a flying superhero from America.

My only problem with the super hero universe is that the justice system never execute the mass murderers that they arrest on a bimonthly basis.

American superheroes are just the modern equivalent of ancient gods. Hey, some of the ancient gods even made it into those ranks!

I wish they'd introduce Typhon and Zeus.
