Well 1 is very good, 2 is stupid, 3 is good, 4 is meh and 5.. I don't even know what to think of 5 what with its purchasable demo and all that.
I always liked it for the in-depth storyline, and the sense of sneaking/being under cover.

Referring mainly to MSG1, I remember how unique the game felt at the time. Sneaking through military bases, flirting on the codec to Mei Ling, it was awesome.

LMAO! Thank you! :D

...watching Otacon pee his pants, wear a cardboard box, switching controller ports.. yes, it was awesome indeed!! :D

lettmon: I started with MGS3 (PS2) a few years ago, I tried it a few times and could not get into it at all although it is claimed as one of the best in series if not the best. I have also tried MGS2 (PS3) and Peace Walker (PSP). I could put up with the awkward controls if the games were enjoyable but they aren't. The extremely slow interface alone drives me mad. Voice acting of Snake sounds retarded, I was rolling eyes when I first heard. I cannot say one good thing about MGS games, they are entirely and completely broken to me. I love other universally loved stealth games like Thief (1998) and Splinter Cell (2002-2006). If MGS are games of their time and need to be played on day one, they age terribly, while I still to this day play Thief fan missions and they are as good as in 1998. Now MGS5 comes out and seems like everyone is hyped out of their mind like gaming has been saved, it makes me dislike this series even more because I admit I don't get it.
MGS 3 is so far the steathiest the series can ever be.

(The stealth mechanics of MGS 1 and 2 were rather simplistic)

And canon wise its technically the "First" game in the storyline.

I understand why the controls may seem dated. You can't croutch walk, you can't move, aim, and shoot. None of the modern control schemes we are used to, MGS 4 is the first game that introduces all that modern controls. (Heck the 3DS version of MGS 3 has the better controls you want)

mgs3 subsistence fixes all those issues, its pretty much a 3ds version

mgs4 controls were more like splinter cell, hell it was splinter cell, the story of sam fisher on a drug induced world

The MGS 4 is split into 5 acts.

Acts 1 and 2 shows off the gameplay the most. Big levels that takes place in the middle of a battle both in the Middle East and South America respectively. (Surprisingly I feel the idea of being a stealthy ghost in the middle of a Battlefield has advantages. All the soldiers around you are fighting each other while you just wade through the shadows unseen)

Act 3 is where story and narrative takes away gameplay (its mostly that you follow a guy to a place, than an on-rails bike chase, than a boss)

Act 4 is one big Nostalgia trip back in Shadow Moses Island now in ruins.

Act 5 is the finale and still gameplay is rather limited because the level design is not that big.
Not everyone has to get everything lettmon, I just think the series isn't for you. :P

From the sound of it MGSV isn't bogged down with story and cutscenes depending on whether you find that a good or bad thing but I hear it plays well from reviews.

Kojima in an article specifically said that MGS5 will not have too much and too long cutscenes as MGS 4 was.

MGS 5 is probably the most gameplay focused title as of late.

I saw that too and was quite happy to hear it. MGS 5 really looks shit hot.

I'm one of the few that accepted MGS 4 for what it is (heck I bought a PS3 for that game) and I defended the hell out of the game. But as time grew on I feel more in love with MGS 3 than 4.

But man MGS 5. I feel they cranked up the Stealth times 10.

Its baffeling that MGS games are becoming more stealthy looking than Splinter Cell Blacklist and Thief 4 :P
Count me in as one person that just could not seem to get into MGS's story or wonky controls. At one time I had the full collection on PS3 and just lost interest in the middle of MGS 2. I tried 3, however; I had a negative feeling going in which eventually concluded in me losing interest entirely.

Funnily enough it looks alot like the original splinter cell games which is a good thing i think. The stealth in metal gear got abit bleh after a while. They never really improved on it much. Eitherway I can't wait to stealth in one big sandbox.

Its times like this that its best to watch whole movies of it on youtube to at least understand the plot.

I have said that MGS 3 was the first game where they made the stealth more sophisticated. (Blending in with the enviornment and camoflauge. Where greenish, grass textured clothes makes me more well hidden in thick grasses)

Same with MGS 4 at least technically. It has a very stealthy gameplay, its just that the later levels complete forget about stealth (Act 4 and 5 in this case)

Like they never truly took advantage of the stealth gameplay in MGS4.

I agree and it was a hell of a shame too. I mean MGS 4 was a damn fun game but the lack of stealth really got frustrating after a while.
