Tallima: Ads for cars are not really
for potential buyers so much as
the people who already bought them.
Seeing the ads makes them appear desirable and
gives you more satisfaction in owning them. It reduces what is called post-purchase dissonance and supports post-purchase reinforcement. Well, if this would be true, then why are they sending me ads for cars that I
didn't buy?
If I go to my car dealer and buy new car "model A", the very next week I find a high glossy brochure in my mail, that wants to sell me new car "model B, C and D", who are bigger, faster and better equipped than that lousy "model A", that I just bought.
Doesn't exactly upping the satisfaction after my recent purchase.
And supporting me in my decision?
By letting the cars that I didnt buy dangle in front of my nose, like you'd do with a carrot and a mule?
Look what we got here...want this, hm? Want this? Come and get it... Nah, I don't think so.
