I'm working on a Doom/Quake throwback FPS. Basically I was just wondering what other fans of the genre would like to see in such a game. What sort of things would make/break the experience for you?

EDIT:

Hey all, I've got a very rough build of the level I've been working on up for download. There's not much to see, but I'm feeling a little unsure of the direction I'm going and am just looking for whatever feedback you might have.

Well, multiplayer-only would certainly break it for me.

Wishbone: Well, multiplayer-only would certainly break it for me.
How about single player only? ;)

I don't have the passion for or knowledge of oldschool deathmatch FPSs to feel confident in making one. My love has always been single player.
The same thing that I get with the old FPS games I love, a recognizable and interactive atmosphere.
I certainly would appreciate if it's not balls hard. I know, I'm a wuss. But I just don't feel like spending hours upon hours anymore just to defeat some boss in game that doesn't even have a story.

The option to save at any time would also be a big plus for me. I hate not being able to take a break from a game when I feel like it, and sometimes when I have to.

I've rarely played a plain fps more than a couple of hours in single player, so i do think that it needs multiplayer but with lan support and if possible dedicated command line only server support.
What keeps me staying away from some modern FPS is this nonsense of on-screen button prompts. Almost as bad as quicktime events. These take me out of the scene and ruin the atmosphere for me, screaming: you are playing a game, hold B to eviscerate! Kills the immersion for me. I wanted to love Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon and was disappointed because of these dumbed-down, modern mechanics.

Keep us updated about your game :)

EDIT: One more thing: I love outdoor areas in FPS. If you could get out of corridors, tunnels etc. sometimes that would be a plus.

After assessing everyone's comments to this point the answer seems clear: we want the EXACT OPPOSITE of 'Hatred'. :D

Mostly because Hatred isn't even an FPS

What is it?
And no keys! For the love of god, don't make me go looking for the fucking red/blue/yellow keys again. I fucking hate running back through the level to find the goddamn things. I'd rather fight a mini-boss, or solve a puzzle, or whatever, just not backtrack for the damn keys.

mobutu: gore :)
And Nudity ;)

Also, no stupid AI partners who either need baby-sitting or are required to perform simple task like "Open this door", which could be very well done by yourself with a single button press.

Also, like the classics you mentioned, alternate routes and ways to complete a level would be a nice throwback (along with some hidden extras / easter eggs that require a bit more effort)

Yup, that was pretty much the first thing I did :)
