What do you make of the latest Windward patch?

"Added extra code to prevent pirated versions from ruining players’ experience. The game has no DRM, so “cracking” an old version to mimic a newer version when connecting to the server is stupid, to say the least. Version checks are there for a reason. If you’re so hellbent on playing online with a pirated version, then just pirate the latest one, not some shady outdated version. Like I said: No DRM!"

Can someone better explain this to me?

I kinda like it, be curious for exactly what they did but yeah, drm free game very small download, but people try to mod it instead of the minute it would take to redownload the newest version

I'd be curious about that as well. It could be that there was something in there like they had in Batman AA where something would go wrong with a pirated version.

And they may have decided that it was sufficiently problematic for non-pirate versions and DRM-free versions that it needed to be fixed.
Sounds like a more robust version check that will detect cracked older versions and not allow them to connect to the server.
So, it absolutely positively under no circumstances could be considered a form of DRM, right?

I wouldn't think so, since there are no actual clients or restrictions involved when just trying to play the game in single player. The only thing this affects is to make sure all game versions in multiplayer are the same. At least, this is how it appears to me.

I wish the crowd of people interested in DRM were that unanimous in their judgements.

Unfortunately, I am sure you will hear from a few who will call it DRM.

I believe it would be unreasonable to call it that.

Multi-player games containing checks for proper versions can exclude players with outdated copies from playing in order to avoid causing technical problems.

Is that DRM? No.

But people will disagree. i'll bet you a donut.
As far as I understand it, it's a version check.
Probably older versions of the game have bugs/balance issues already fixed, that give unfair advantages or cause problems when playing online with current versions.
Thus they check the version of the game and I guess they now will only allow current versions for online gaming.

Well, that's because it _is_ DRM. The relevant question is whether or not there will be options for playing versions that haven't been updated on other servers.

I personally see no problem with it as long as people are free to play on other servers that allow old versions. But, if you're having to play on official servers that only support specific versions, well that's pretty much exactly the kind of thing that GOG was trying to avoid in the first place.
