They DID have a say in how it was packaged though. At least according to different sources I've read... which may or may not be accurate.

Start taking off? GOG has been around since 2008. Personally I think they "took off" at around 2011-2012. Maybe even in 2013 when they released System Shock 2 after all those years.

I doubt it will get any "higher" than this. GOG proved old PC games can sell, preservation was worth it, and now multiple companies seek the rights to older games to remaster or repackage them on both GOG and Steam. Most people don't care about DRM free, they care about playing their multiplayer focused games with their friends. Thus Steam and Battle.net dominate with humongous numbers. The only reason to shop here is if a) you really hate drm or b) you value sales overall and don't care where you get your games.

I wish the site and client would support more developers.

With their hard curated approach , i doubt we will see anything skyrocket here they just seem to be happy getting what was popular and stable on steam release here afterwards , steam maybe a place where are a tons of crappy games but its open approach means , we can have tons of awesome games indies what not become a huge hit out of nowhere , they dont have to depend on a well established series always to bring in customers.


Steam also has features through which the devs can make money aka trading cards, skins, marketplace .Also mod workshops and easier patching of games, steam matchmaking.

Then vote with your wallet. There just isn't any other meaningful way. Buy everything you can, now! And tomorrow too! Every day, night and day, in and out, around and round.

Sure you can also tell about the site to your friends and relatives and dog too, but do not be too preachy about it. You should just accept it if someone still says "sounds nice, but I guess I stay on Steam".

As tomimt said, they got the rights. They have full authority to sell and tweak these games, and they are still including the originals as a service to those hardcore enough to want them yet somehow never got them in the years prior. There's no moral crusade here that makes sense, IMO. There would be if Beamdog actively stopped the originals from being available, like George Lucas with Star Wars for example, but they did the opposite.

They did stop the original from being sold, you can only get it if you buy the new one. I don't believe that anyone should be allowed to con money out of people simple as that. If you want to defend malpractice that's your lookout.

Consider the originals the reason to buy then, does it really matter? They're worth the remaster prices anyway, and they go on sale constantly. There is no "con" or "malpractice" going on here. Those words being used this way are almost comical.

Anyway, this same debate is going on in a more relevant thread elsewhere today so I'll stop slapping the ping-pong ball in this one.

I'm actually pretty satisfied with the catalog here. There are some new games (usually from independent developers), but I personally came to the site when it was "Good Old Games" because I like old games.

That said, I wouldn't object if Stardock were to actually put GalCiv 3 on sale again at some point, it's been a while and they might finally have worked enough on it to make it better than 2 ...
