Too bad I've never been a great shot with the lightning bolt spell, otherwise that would've made them even more powerful.

Interestingly enough, the weapons restrictions on Clerics in D&D were modelled after him. They were inspired by "Gary's reading the old stories about Archbishop Turpin, who wielded a mace because he didn't want to shed blood ("who lives by the sword dies by the sword")"."[2]
The archbishop must've been out of his gourd, though. If you hit something full of blood with a giant piece of metal as hard as you can, some blood's going to come out. It's not like you're going to pull your hits so the target just ends up with the world's most horrific string of hickey-like bruises.
