TheJoe: Only a few subjects have given me the results I was expecting, so far.

that being?

Aliasalpha: that being?

Being this a social experiment that was started with only "Deus Ex" as the OP in the forum of a comunity dedicated about old classics frequented by gamers, it's possible that the result expected have nothing to do with talking about the game at all.
Or I'm just starting to over-analise that thing and jumped to a completely wrong conclusion.

I will release the results after an indefinite reception of an adequately quantitied set of subjects.

Vagabond: Fuck you all. Deus Ex is the best video game ever made.

Aliasalpha: What happened to the fanatical love of Crusader? Has it offended you in some way? Giving you the Silencer treatment?

No no, Crusader is my favorite game... Deus Ex is simply the BEST game (and my second favorite game.)

captfitz: dude, l2vag

I love you.

Miaghstir: I'm not going to learn French just to play a game.

well duh.
you learn french to pretend to be a french exchange student
For those calling Deus Ex an ugly game, well duh, it's old. Download some of the high res texture packs, they significantly improve the looks.
As for it being over-rated, well, it is my favourite game of that style and I think it is an excellent game, one of the best in fact. Have I over-rated, I don't think so, but someone who cares more about twitch based combat, headshots and fast gameplay won't like it as much. It depends on what sort of games the person likes.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it an ugly game even way back when? Or am I thinking of Anachronox, which uses the same engine and also has an 'x' in its name?
Either way, the overall art design isn't all that attractive to begin with, and with today's animation standards the game becomes downright hideous to look at.

Who called it ugly? Well, besides Whitecroc, just now.
I just said the PS2 version didn't look as good as the PC version.
(Oh, I see it. One rather offhanded comment on page 1 that I quite overlooked.)

Whitecroc: ...Machina?

Yes?
Classic, but trumped by many older games.

Mentalepsy: A friend of mine had this version. It's the same game, as far as I know, but simplified in some ways for console play (for example, your inventory is just a list of items, instead of a drag-and-drop grid). Obviously, it doesn't look, play or control as nicely as it does on PC, either.
avatar
Delixe: It does have better lighting and nicer cutscenes. Yes it was dumbed down a little to make it console friendly but the core game remains unchanged so as console ports go it's one of the better ones.
avatar
Mentalepsy: Does it? I didn't think it looked very good. The textures were a bit dirty, as I recall, and the frame rate could have been better. I didn't sit there for hours looking at it, though.
avatar
Delixe: Swings and roundabouts. The lighting was better because it's easy to do on the PS2 without impacting performance. Textures took a bad hit and some levels were re-designed to cope with the lower memory of the console. As it stands though it is still the same game so for people who didn't have a PC at the time it was acceptable enough.

Thanks, guys, I'll give it a try. The keyboard and mouse for PS2 really works, or it's better to play the game with a control?

Yeah, even for then it was a pretty ugly game. But if a game and its story and gameplay is good, graphics really doesn't matter as much. Or that's just me.
System Shock. System Shock 2. Much betterer.

I haven't had the pleasure of playing these or Deus Ex either. If GOG gets them I guess I will. So you say Deus Ex is stat based? Like Fallout? (not 3, which stats are meaningless)
