Ahoy,
I apologize if there's already an Ace of Spades thread on GOG. If there is, you can link me and then close this.
If there's not, then:
Ace of Spades is a game I discovered awhile ago, when it was on release 0.026 (I think.)
Rock Paper Shotgun has done some articles on the game. It didn't work for me then. It does now, though. It's currently 0.051. Or possibly 0.51. I can't remember.
The game is really, really fun.
Basically, it's like world war 1, with Minecraft elements. You have your trusty rifle, and a grenade. That's it for weapons. You also have a spade (hence the punny title, Ace of Spades), a pickaxe, and a block (to build with, ala Minecraft.)
I'm not trying to over-do the Minecraft references, but that's just the best way to describe that PART of the game. But don't expect a relaxed sandbox building experience.
This game is actually really intense.
You choose Blue or Green team (and believe it or not, the Wiki has some psychoanalyzing on the warfare techniques of each colour! They claim Blue are usually more aggressive and never build bridges...)
I've heard it compared to Red Orchestra, for a couple of reasons, and from what I've seen of both, that's somewhat accurate. Usually you're sniping across a distance and you die in only a few hits. I would say 2-3.
That said, it's actually very accessible. Not only that, it's really freaking fun.
Usually when you get on a map (from my experience) your team has already dug trench system and rat holes and things like that. If you just run at the enemies base Black Ops style you'll probably be headshotted. Not always, but I'd say there's a 50% chance there's a sniper watching. Much safer to take the trenches.
You could of course tunnel your way into the enemy base. Which leads me to the next thing, IE WHY you would want to get in the enemy base. The game is basically Capture the Flag. You have to get the enemy intel and return it to your base. That's it. Very simple. But the mechanics are just so fun and rewarding that it doesn't need to be overly complex.
The guy who made it (I think it's just one guy), says now that he's done bugfixing, he's going to focus on adding more weapons (Yay!) and things like that.
Here's the official website, where you can download it:

Here's the Rock Paper Shotgun article:

and here's the picture-guide for the game (also linked on RPS): http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/images/11/apr/spade/spade.png
Finally, if you get a weird error when trying to connect to a server, try a different one, or try again.
Just on an estimate, I think there are about 200 people playing.
This deserves to be an indie sensation in my opinion. And hopefully the more people who play it, the more awesome the creator will make it!
Have fun! And once again, sorry if someone already made this.
