Local weather fried one of my legacy machines, an ancient AMD K6 machine running Windows 2000 (the Amigas and MSXs are fine), and with the CPU totally unusable, I thought "this'd make a kickass necklace if I could drill a hole in it". Using my floor drill press (a Grizzly G7944) and a cobalt alloy bit, I got about halfway through. But when I got to the core, I couldn't even scratch it. Like an idiot, I thought trying from the other side would make a difference, which it didn't, and I ended up breaking the bit.
Why did I fail epically to get through? How are CPU's compressed like that and with what materials? How come there aren't flak jackets made of this stuff? Is it that prohibitively expensive?

Thats interesting - and to think we are under the impression they are fragile ;-)
Anyway, memories of the AMD K6 - My AMD K6 was the first machine I ran MM6 on and will always remember it fondly. Had to get a special K6 patch if I remember correctly.
So you got through the ceramic on top and the metal below and the silicon wafer in the middle broke the drill bit?
Link below talks about what and how they are made. Its an intresting read.

Because they'd be too hot and you wouldn't run as fast

I've got this set of Body Armor that has a kind of liquid re circulation portion of it that even in 130+F I stay pretty cool.... it was like 24k for the vest and helm, it also has a built in pair of ESS glasses with Camera attached and a kick ass head set that keeps me in Com's (most of the time)
Then again I try to avoid situations that would require me to wear it :p

Are you saying that the US army makes you buy your own equipment, or do you just happen to know what they pay for it?

Why would the US Army make you buy your own equipment? What is this, SWEDEN?

If it's anything like the UK, the troops get a decent selection of equipment. However, sometimes people buy their own equipment because it's better than standard issue. Does also depend on your CO allowing you to use it, easy enough with boots or whatever, bit different if you're buying body armour etc..

Sweden has an army? I thought it was a ballet training camp.

Fighting terrorists with dance!
I think I read somewhere that american troops (and if I recall correctly akwater isn't one but a contractor) couldn't buy their own armour even though it was superior because of some insurance thing. It was only a vague memory because what I thought when reading it was 'ahh thats why there's no TIE fighters with shields'
Im a civvie :) So, I can buy whatever i want and feel safer in. I do have a set of gov issue vest/helmet however it weighs a fuckton and is uncomfortable so I bought my own

Might I suggest a 20 metre tall heavily armoured mech?
"Oh shit its an IED! Great, now I'm going to have to repaint that section! THANKS!"

Ah sorry. My mistake. I've gotten the impression somehow that you're stationed there in a military function.
