blotunga: Good that you don't need a visa to enter the US. A friend of mine wanted to travel to New Zealand, and he didn't knew that he needs a visa for Australia in order to change the plane in Australia (same airport). And since he didn't had an Australian visa, he had to turn back all the way. So customs and immigration policies suck wherever you go, especially if you're from some backwater country and not from the ruling elite...
I thought that boarding areas were neutral areas, so you don't need a visa to transport.

In Japan I only needed my passport. Why would you need a Visa for transferring through a foreign airport?

RedRagan: I can't wait until we finally built giant train road that circle the earth from end to end.

jjsimp: You'll be waiting a long time for the USA to decide a train is a wise investment outside of our major cities. I would love some of those bullet trains going easy-west and north south across our country...but our mass transit system is stuck in the 1950's.
At least you guys got sleeping quarters in those trains. But with lack of dandy clothings like it's early 1900.

jjsimp: I originally was thinking of staying somewhere in Jersey and catch a train in, but trains didn't leave early enough for my job. And a Taxi would have been about the same price or more than the parking.

grimwerk: There's an express bus that runs from Newark airport to NYC all night, every 30 minutes, $16 one way. Also, many of the accommodations near Newark airport have a free shuttle service to and from the airport. In the past, when I wanted to be super cheap, I got rooms near Newark (which are much more reasonable than in the city), caught the hotel service to the airport, then took the express shuttle. It's been a while, but from hotel to NYC was under an hour last time I did this. Just ensure that the hotel service leaves early enough for you.
Yeah, just make sure you stay AT the airport hotels...though a quick trip for dinner in the Ironbound is definitely fun!
I don't think you're wrong for cursing US customs or indeed would be wrong for cursing customs in most countries. The details might be wrong, but the actual act of slagging them off is nonetheless justified.

Because from what I've heard, the US forces everyone to go through customs, even if they are just transferring. Ask the people in charge why they do it, although it's not hard to guess.

That's actually why when I go to Japan next week I'll take the long way around through Germany even though it would be cheaper to do a layover in the US instead, because then I'd have to go through the extra trouble of getting a transit visa for the two hours between flights I'd spend on the country.

Transit visa is the most ridiculous thing I ever heard. I know US is a paranoid country now but this is stretching a bit too much.

I went to US back in the 90s and those airport people are nicer back then. If I want to go overseas I will skip transiting in US now.

Apparently it was not... I know for certain that in Dubai you need a transit visa for example... so must be the same here. Only in Dubai you can get your transit visa in the airport.

Because you're an US citizen. Us, 2nd class citizens of the world need visas if we want to travel anywhere... Else we might get ideas and stay there :P.

On polish passport you don't need a visa to enter Japan. I think you can spend a month and half in the country without any visa.

No that's three friends of mine, you can't see me in the picture. I was actually in the hut there when that picture was taken, on the computer chatting with you guys.

P1na: As I usually do, I'm leting you know that I take such offers very seriously so make sure you mean them.
NP, if I'm free, and you're passing through, or just hangin in the area for a bit, I'm more than happy to meet up. I'm about an hour North of the city, but always happy to come on down for some social activities, and always enjoy meeting new folks. If my gal is free, I'll have her tag along...def keep me in mind for the future bro (or gal, as the case may be) :)

Normally, if you're not leaving the airport, they'll process you through customs, then send you to your plane. That's what happened when I transferred in South Korea on my way home. There's an international treaty that covers that.

However, when it comes to taking a plane out of a different airport, then countries have the right to require a visa. Although, I think it's usually granted on arrival in cases like that.

Depends on where you're coming from and where you're going. I think that NZ flights from Australia are treated like domestic flights. And to board these you have to clear customs. And for that you need a visa, which you can get only in your home country... except if you have 1st class citizenship (meaning states like US, UK, Germany etc)
