Anyone know of a good one?

My wife and I are moving and I'm using my 40" Toshiba 1080p TV as a temporary monitor. I'm closer to the image than I was at normal TV distance so the flaws in it are really obvious now. The blacks are too black, crushing the image, and lines are not very well defined or crisp. Compared to my cheap-ass monitor it looks terrible.

I assume it just needs calibration as it's a good brand and has always looked amazing from normal distance. I don't think it's purely a distance issue because I can look at my monitor from insanely close up and it still looks much better.

I use a 24" 720P TV as a monitor. If I try to use any resolution other than its native 1360 x 768, it will look like crap. So you might want to try setting your computer to the native resolution of your TV, which for your 40" is probably 1920 x 1080.
