orcishgamer: If you're playing a downloaded version of WC3 off Battle.net doesn't it have the same DRM as SC2 or close to? Like an authenticating launcher or something? They don't just hand you a DRM free version like GOG does, do they?
For the downloaded version of WC3 you need to enter the CD key after the game is installed. Nothing else to play the singleplayer and LAN (i didn't try the LAN).

Phosphenes: I still think Starcraft 2 should drop the logging in every month thing. It is a mainly online game but it can still be played just as well single player or on the lan. What about people without Internet access.
Fair, or not, I think it's becoming more and more accepted that being always connected is the norm.

orcishgamer: So there's literally no DRM on the downloaded version? Or does the install lock to your hardware or something?
Not beyond the CD key, no. Which - as I said - even if it for some reason has been banned from battle.net, can be used to install and play solo and LAN (and LAN, of course, also means direct IP connections over the 'net as long as the host's firewall is configured to accept connections on the correct port).

KavazovAngel: [Starcraft 2 has a custom "DRM", similar to what Diablo 3 will be using. You'll be able to play the single player "DRM-free" (offline mode) if you log on at least once every 30 days. You need your account for playing on Battle.Net's servers.

strongmokus: Playing offline mode requires online activation. That's online DRM. And it's official, not just my point of view. ;)
Yes, I agree. I said custom "DRM", because only part of the game is DRM-ed. :p

I think the possibility of exploiting the guest pass system is the reason they added the 30 days reactivation.

macuahuitlgog: I should of been more clear. I'm talking about the DRM that gets installed on to your computer like Securom.
Nope, afaik Blizzard used their own custom DRM in the past for disc checking.

No LAN in Sc2 - only Bnet or single. Kind of justifies this on-line DRM thing, come to think of it. :)

Which is a shame, because I spent more hours of my life than I care to admit at LAN parties with SC 1.

It's not an offline mode if you need to go online. It's clearly the same like a repeated online-re-activation thing. Quite bad in my books. I would prefer a disc check anyday.

More than anything, I wish they would drop the region crap. I would have SC2 by now, but I will only be able to play with half the people I know since everyone is divided up. So depressing. It scares me D3 will be the exact same in this regard.

Not only that, but installing the latest patch on a disc copy removes the CD check. As long as you back up the patch and look after your disc and CD-key the game's basically DRM-free.

Well it's all of the game that's DRM'd considering you have to reactivate the offline mode every 30 days.

Anyway, with the offline mode, you have access only to singleplayer campaign. After finishing it, you don't have nothing else to do in this mode, there is no skirmish, custom map, LAN...
