It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).

GameRager: The OP said that some of the features are for their tablets only...like the big icons.

cogadh: Except if you actually watch the video, Jensen Harris goes on and on about how the new interface works great with tablets, smartphones and desktop PCs with a keyboard and mouse. They are trying to push a common interface across all computing platforms, which is not a bad idea in theory, but in practice, not so much. It may be optional to use this new interface right now, but this is Microsoft: today's options are tomorrow's standards. Windows 8 might let use a "classic" interface, but you can bet Windows 9 won't.
If there is a Windows 9.......if Win8 tanks in popularity because of more bloat/etc who knows what'll happen?
But I JUST UPGRADED TO 7

GODDAMNIT MICROSOFT

Tell that to Mac OS users. ;D

I wouldn't worry about it. The only architectural difference with 8, so far as I know, is ARM support, but I don't anticipate many ARM-exclusive apps for a while (at least not in 8's timeline).

Then why make or buy it?

It would take a lot more than a single OS failure to eliminate the inevitability of a Windows 9 happening. MS is far too integrated into our understanding and expectations of PCs for it to ever be replaced just because one OS version was a little less than spectacular. If that were the case, Vista would have eliminated Win 7, Win ME would have eliminated Win 2000/XP and Windows 1.0 would have eliminated the entire OS family. There will definitely be a 9th version of Windows to follow Win 8, it just might not actually be called "Windows 9".
Umm... I'm just fine with Windows XP and Linux. :/

lukipela: damnit. fucking slash and demut.
Who's slash and demut? Give credit where credit is due, you didn't get to -2 rep by annoying a mere two people, you know. ¬_¬

Yes this is probably what'll happen but if they keep making bloated OSs eventually someone is gonna try and corner the market by bringing a better OS to bear......which MS will then buy out.

Because they can, because the Windows group needs to keep busy. Remember, this is the company who brought you MS Bob, Windows ME, the Kin, PlaysForSure, and Clippy. Not meaning to bash MS (in fact I'm also of the opinion that 7 is good enough to not need to dual boot into Linux), but let's not pretend that this is a company above silliness.

Lol @ Clippy, and i'm glad I never tried ME....though i've heard some terrible terrible things. 0.o

Also wtf is MS Bob and PlayforSure?

Oh and what I meant is usually they like to integrate stuff people need to do their day to day or need to play the latest titles in their newer OSs....if this one is similar to Win7 then what's gonna make people cough up for upgrades en masse?

That ARM support was only added to expand the Windows offerings in the smartphone world. It was a business/profits decision on Microsoft's part.

Neat fact, Windows 8 running on an ARM device cannot run X86 software, so if you end up getting a Win 8 ARM device, don't expect to be able to run pretty much anything on it, since none of the existing software will work with it and no one has (yet) written Windows-based software for ARM devices.

A cartoon interface for either Win 3.1 or 95 where you were in a room, and there were different cartoon characters that represented different functions. It's literally as dumb as it sounds.

GameRager: and PlayforSure?
A 'standardized' DRM scheme for music files so that there would be a compatible ecosystem of stores and devices that could all play each other's music. It sounded like a decent idea (this was before DRM was largely abandoned for music) and the ecosystem pretty much got there. Then MS released the Zune and accompanying store, neither of which was at all compatible with PlaysForSure, essentially kicking all of their partners to the curb.

KavazovAngel: Hah :D. Personally, I'd love this to be the background of the desktop... It is VERY functional, I'm using a WP device, and the Live Tiles are an amazing piece of innovation!
Did you ever use windows mobile 6.1 or 6.5? I moved to iphone after that "experience". I still love bringing Ipad to all MS partner meetings just to piss the local representatives off :) It somehow soothes my rage.

haha lols same here
Personally, couldn't care less for touchscreen interface. Especially when everything is so huge. I'll wait for a video of a more desktop'y interface, if they have one.
