Does anyone here remember playing this game. It was a solitaire board game where you managed a small squad during WWII. Enemy soldier markers weren't placed on the board until certain requirements were met. For instance, each time you moved a squad member into a new hex, you would check a table for that scenario to see if an enemy soldier might see that movement and fire at that soldier. Or rolls for random events might play out.

It was a great series for solitaire play. It included expansions Purple Heart, and Move Out. The only detriment was that the number of scenarios were small, and there was no variation on the placement of the enemy, so replay value was limited.

So anyone know of any computer games in this style. Commandos came close but not what I'm really looking for.

Thanks for any replies.

Try Avalon Hill's Squad Leader.
And the Jagged Alliance series of games as well as X-Com 1,2 and 3.

edit:

Not exactly turnbased but the Close Combat series of games might also be something you like.

I would have said HPS squad battles, but the price of each module is, simply said, outrageous.

The Close combat, combat mission and steel panthers series have some elements of it, but are played at another scale. Conflict of Heroes ( Slitherine) is based on the eponymous board game.

edit : Close combat rebuilds are available from Slitherine, at a price. Combat mission overlord is on Gog, the others on Battlefront. Steel Panthers was once updated by Matrix that has since then stopped supporting it. That version can be downloaded from the SP:WaW depot;

If you can find a copy of 101st Airborne Over Normandy, that would certainly fit the bill. You build up your squads and equip each soldier for your mission. Then the random airdrops scatter everyone to Hell and back, some guys die immediately, someone else breaks a leg on landing, the machine gunner loses his kit bag (and the machine gun) somewhere, nobody can find the maps and you're trying to work from memory of the pre-mission sand tables. It's a fantastic game, and it's almost infinitely replayable due to the random nature of it.

Ambush! was a fantastic game, by the way. The only problem with it was the length of time needed to play through a scenario.

Strijkbout: Jagged Alliance's gameplay looks to be close to what I had in mind, keeping it at squad level.

Phc: I had a look at Squad Battles. Didn't see any videos of gameplay. Looks interesting, but as you said, the price. I played a couple of demos of the Close Combat series back when I got discs from PC Gamer. Interesting games, but too much small detail managing. Ambush! was a more lazy, easy going game to whittle away a couple of hours.

Crass: No luck finding anything on 101st. About the length of time playing a scenario, I felt it was nice and short, as compared to playing out a game of Third Reich, Fortress Europa, etc.

Thanks for the replies. Doesn't appear that there was an accurate remake of Ambush! for the computer. Alas. For the sake of forum etiquette, Jagged Alliance seems the closest, so I will mark Strijkbout's reply as the solution. Again, thanks for taking the time to reply.

As for "101st Airborne Over Normandy", it's not available for download anywhere. Shrapnell games worked on a sequel (82nd ...) but that game remains "being worked upon" (although it can be preordered, but that's not advisable ). The retail version can be found on ebay, inexpensive here in Europe, pricey in the US) but I'm far from sure it will be easy to get working on win 7 or 8.

There was once upon a time a game named "Computer Ambush", released in the early eighties by SSI, on Apple IIc and C64.
