For general reading I prefer having books, but I still think these are interesting technology. As a research tool they could be so damn useful. The most annoying bit about research is, I feel, all those hours wasted trying to locate that one particular passage in a book I know is in there, somewhere. I like doing my research in odd places, too - cafes, parks, etc., and prefer to take notes in handwriting, rather than typing on a computer. That means I usually am out there with two backpacks filled to the brim with books. If I could just take a lightweight device that stores many (more) of them (and scientific articles) that also includes a search engine ... yay.
So as such - they seem great. But I don't think it's an all too useful techonlogy at the moment. Mostly due to politics. Too many different propriety formats and incompatibilities, no proper interface that would allow "electronic libraries/borrowing of books" etc. etc.
