It depends on whether you are referring to the games prior to Duke Nukem 3D.
A return to the style of the first two games would be welcome.
I don't think that any triple-a Duke Nukem game would sell well today, especially not with his character.
Can you imagine how people like Sarkeesian would have reacted had DNF been released today ?
DNF felt old and outdated even before it was released, much of it because of Duke's personality.
The ideal FPS for most people today are the BioShock and Far Cry games, those are the benchmarks.
To be profitable enough, a 'Duke' game would have to adapt even more to modern games than DNF ever did, removing even more from the original games. For one thing they would need to make Duke's character much more "vanilla", but by then he wouldn't be Duke anymore (at least not the Duke from 3D). Gearbox would have to base any new game on the Duke from the first two games, someone who is more of a regular action hero.
By the way, for all the hate DNF received, I thought the game was OK. I bought the game based on Clint's review from Lazy Game Reviews, and I agree with most of his opinions about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_EESRrn-Ck
However, and this is my big point, even if DNF had stayed true to Duke 3D it would not have been a successful game in terms of sales, unless backed by famous youtubers and gaming media like GameSpot and IGN. Without this backing these kind of games will not sell as well. Wolfenstein TNO got a lot of backing and therefore was deemed a success by our gaming media, a self-fulfilling prophecy regardless of the nature of the game.
