I have a question about Fallout 3. Does it have any form of DRM attached to it?
Gamersgate is selling it for $14.97 and thought about picking it up, but I do not want it if it has any DRM on it.
Thanks for the help.

GFWL Which is really light as DRM goes. You can even remove it by running the Fallout Mod Manager and FOSE.
It will also require SecuROM activation when you launch the game for the first time which at least with D2D's version happens when patching it without an option to disable it so SecuROM WILL be installed always.
You can uninstall SecuROM manually afterwards and as long as you launch the game using the fallout3.exe directly instead of the launcher it won't get reinstalled. You could also use a cracked launcher if it happens that you need the launcher for any reason (like changing your graphic settings, activating DLC, etc.)

I'd rather pick up the game of the year edition with the expansion packs bundled together. But it's your call.

1. That's not taking into account activation limits. Which may even be hidden and unknown to even the publisher. I don't know if this affects Fallout 3 as it's apparently something like 15 usually and I haven't installed it that many times yet.
2. That's if it worked fucking properly and wasn't a pain in the arse for non-copy protection reasons also.
3. That's also overlooking the fact that GFWL can be ignored completely in Fallout 3 at the loss of only the achievements.
Thanks guys for the help. I think I will pass as I have no idea what GFWL stands for nor FOSE. I know one thing is I do not want SecuRom on my system.
I have lived this long without playing it, so all will be well! :o)
Thanks again for the help.

Games For Windows Live is a Microsoft client that runs in game. But it can be completely ignored in Fallout 3. You don't need to bother with it at all. I completed the game before I even noticed it.
But, as stated, you'd probably be best off with the retail game of the year edition now anyway. You can completely bypass the disc check in that too if you want.

Not if you use Fallout3.exe.

Thats the whole point I was trying to make. Yes there is SecuROM but you bypass it by using the .exe. FMM and FOSE removes GFWL. So there really is no DRM.
FOSE?

Sielle: FOSE?

Fallout Script Editor. It enables people to write new stuff.

I know that but the OP was asking about the digital download version from GamersGate. The cd check from FO3 is SecuROM too though.
The DRM for the GamersGate version is currently listed as Unknown so there is a possibility that it doesn't even have SecuROM. Of course, the only way to know for sure is to ask their support.
