"I've heard Freedom Planet described as a Sonic clone. I'd call it a worthy Sonic successor, it's that good." - TotalBiscuit

About the game:

Freedom Planet is a combat-based platform adventure that pits a spunky dragon girl and her friends against an alien attack force. There's trouble around every turn, from insects to giant robots to sheer explosive destruction, but you'll have a variety of special fighting abilities to blast your way through each stage.

As Lilac, you can use Dragon powers to whip enemies with your hair, spin like a cyclone, or fly through the air at high speed like a comet. As Carol, you can bust through foes with a flurry of punches and kicks or summon motorcycles that let you ride up walls and ceilings.

Do you have what it takes save Avalice?

-Dash across the celestial world of Avalice with boosts, bikes and other high-speed gimmicks to achieve the fastest time
-Explore at your own pace to find hidden paths and treasures and collect as many crystals as possible
-Help Lilac and friends save their world from war in an engaging Adventure mode with fully voiced cutscenes
-Zoom through the stages without interruption or dialog with Classic mode
-Battle tons of quirky boss enemies including giant robots, towering alien creatures and aggressive rivals
-Discover five elemental shields that reflect specific attacks and provide cool benefits
-Unlock special bonuses, including mini-games, achievements and unused artwork and music

Reviews:

"Freedom Planet is an emotional, comedic and fun fast-paced platformer that will keep you on your toes and wary of incoming dangers."
5/5 – Gamerscape

“Freedom Planet is well-written love letter to the sixteen-bit era, reminding players of the power of the action-platformer. Expect to be serenaded by the splendid soundtrack.”
81/100 – Tech-Gaming

“Freedom Planet is like a missing jewel from the Sega Saturn catalog, an amazing action game that can be described a (good) Sonic 2D game developed by the Treasure. Don't miss it-- along with Shovel Knight, it's the retro-indie game of the year.”
8.5/10 – Meristation

That's crazy. Looks like it's a bit of an evolution rather than a clone.
I recall the devs mentioned on Kickstarter and maybe much later on Twitter or Facebook that they sent GOG a build. It looks good, but the demo was tough. :P

Also, I remember the artist of this game was working on his own project over at The Daily Click, FableQuest, but it was never finished. I was really looking forward to that one.
I tweeted the developer:

"@galaxytrail I'd love to be able to get #FreedomPlanet #DRMfree on GOG.com . Have you considered releasing the game there?"

His response:

"@Barry_Woodward We contacted them but we're still waiting for a response. In the meantime, we're on the Humble Store for PC/Mac."

I can't dl the demo right now, so I'm curious, which 2D Sonic would you compare this game to?

Probably Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

Looks like I voted for this one a while back. I hope it shows up here.
Confusing default keyboard controls, but the demo tells me the game should be fun. The Windows version works great under CrossOver, but a native Linux version would be preferable.
And done.

Yup, just waiting for it and Agarest to be made available to purchase. :)
