This is a great platform for fans of old games. I signed in here yesterday to buy "Phantasmagoria 1" which runs on my computer like cream. Phantasmatastic :-)

In my old games collection, there's the above mentioned which will not even install on Windows 7 (32bit). Right at the start there's an error message of which I am posting a png. Maybe it would be a challenge for you guys to get that one running? It's strange, but I remember spending many great hours solving those weird puzzles. Maybe there'd be more people interested in it than just me. Or maybe someone has a solution for this error?

Thanks,
Marlene

Try running the game as Admin and don't install it in C:\Program Files.
Well, this didn't help much, because the error message appears before the installation even starts as the setup.exe wants to copy files to some temp directory wherever this may be. Guess there's no chance. Thanks for replying anyway.
First lets get the easy solutions out of the way: Right-click on setup.exe, choose "Properties", select the "Compatibility" tab, check the box before "Run this game in compatibility mode", and select Windows 95 in the drop-down menu below. Click on "ok", then right-click again on the exe, and choose "Run as Administrator". If you get stuck at one of these steps, tell us which one and describe the problem that stops you.

The game may be very difficult to get to run. It's a Windows 95/98 game, and those often used non-standard techniques that won't work on modern systems. At the same time the games are too demanding to run them in a full-software emulation like DOSbox or Bochs.

From the screenshot you posted, it seems that the installer tries to determine the system's standard temporary folder, but arrives at an illegal path (the two backslashes in a row). It might be possible getting it to work through fiddling with the Windows settings that determine these paths. Or, if the installer can't be made working at all, there's a chance that the game files can be extracted manually, which _might_ result in a working game. Be aware though that the effort may just as well be in vain though.
it wont be much of a challenge when you run it in a virtual environment.

simple put if a game still works in windows 7, you're lucky. if it doesnt, well you are out of luck. you just can't have compability forever.

http://www.adventuregamers.com/forums/showthread.php?p=597885 seems to talk about faust in windows vista but it is down at the moment.

Somebody posted a solution here (there's English after the French). I wouldn't know if it works, though.
Thanks! This looked very promising, but unfortunately, the files have gone from wherever this friendly person put them. No wonder.... it was from 2008 :-)

I guess I will just put the CDs back into my shelf and wait until someone decides to make the game compatible for newer OS's
Thank you. Darn, I always forget about the compatibility mode, but it didn't help at all in this case. Maybe, whenever I have too much time, I will try to find a way working round the // which appear in the error message. For the time being, I stick to DOS games or such which are still playable :-)

It turns out that Fuast actually is compatible with Windows 7. The only problem is that it's installer is not. That's why that guy disassembled the file.. I don't have an alternative version of this file, but i've found a manual solution.

Instructions:
1.) Create a destination folder for the game on your hard drive. For example, let it be C:\Games\Faust\
2.) Insert/mount the first CD1 with the game, then copy from it to the C:\Games\Faust\ the next:
data folder (entirely)
ames . ini
aObj . ini
arxin3 . fon
faust16 . exe
faust . exe
fl . ini
mmxImage . dll
3.) Copy file sa . at3 from the C:\Games\Faust\data\eng\ to C:\Games\Faust\data\ (if you have different language version then instead of eng it can be "ger" or "fra" or "rus")

4.) Open fl . ini from the C:\Games\Faust\ (with notepad for example) and find the next line:
CDPATH: CDROM
Edit it like this:
CDPATH: E:\
Instead of E:\ you should use your CD-ROM drive letter.

5.) That's it. Launch the game with faust . exe or faust16 . exe, and change the CDs when it's necessary.

Keywords: Faust 7 seven Games of the Soul windows 7 "Error copying to temp directory : source:E:\ dest:C:\Windows\\TEMP\"
For the reference, the solution was found here: nquest . ucoz . com/forum/8-369-1 and it worked for me on my Windows 7

Very great solution Steelcracker!! I had the same error mentionned up there and I followed your instructions. But when I click on the .exe files the game starts, but stays on black screen than I get a message that the program does'nt respond. :/ Some one knows what is happening???

Thank you!

Marlene55m I see that the solution worked for you. Did the blackscreen happened?
Hi!

I followed the instructions you wrote to play the game with Windows 7 ... but when I launch the game, there's only a black screen and a message says that the program doesn't respond. Do you have any tip about that? Thank you!! :)

Ha ha, so true.
I'll admit I became a little excited when I saw this bumped. Faust: Seven Games of the Soul was developed by Cryo Interactive, who already has some games on GOG, so perhaps this one is a possibility in the future.
Thanks guys, I have really nice memories connected with this game. My friends bought it for my birthday because they knew I adore Goethe. I enjoyed the game, mostly because I assumed from the very beginning I wouldn't compare it to the actual Faust at all. It was a good assumption that saved the game for me ;) To tell the truth my good memories comes not from the game but rather from the aforementioned birthday and the party... it was spectacular. My boxed edition should be somewhere around here. Perhaps I should play it again...
