Kuchenschlacht, I feel your problems with the free camera are endemic to third person games in general, not just action RPGs. Hell, I'm sure I've had some camera struggles with platformers like Mario 64.

If an RPG makes me spend 10 minutes customizing my face I want to be able to see my face on a regular basis, so a third person camera makes a lot of sense. It's always been frustrating for me how the Elder Scrolls games have you those customization options yet are primarily designed for first person perspective.

Tile-based first person has always been a weird case for me. I'm intrigued by them for some reason, yet I always find them hard to navigate for reasons like all the walls looking the same. If there's an automap I can navigate mostly with that, leaving me wondering if the game couldn't just ditch the first person perspective and be a proper top-down or isometric game. If you're controlling a party, those games also have the weird property where your party is actually a single 4-6 headed creature. The Gold Box games alleviated this by switching to a top-down view for combat, but again I wonder if they couldn't just make the whole thing top-down.
