Hello GOG people,

What's your opinion about the Samsung tablet Galaxy Tab 3 10.1?

I was thinking to get rid of my laptop, since i use it mostly to read and to play Good Old Games.

Or a Windows 8 tablet is better? I thought about the Samsung tablet only cause i own a Samsung Smart TV, which might have some cool gimmicks with a Samsung tablet.

But a Window tablet might be just as cool. Or better... any thoughts?

Thank you all,

If you go for Windows tablet be sure to get one with a regular x86 processor, as the RT version that use ARM don't work with regular Windows applications.

I haven't used Tab3, but I personally have 7 inch Tab 2, which I regularily use for reading (ecomics and ebooks), surfing and games, either native Android or ScummVM/DosBox. It's been good to me thus far. ScummVM games should work relative painlesly on any tablet, but at least on Android DosBox games reguire some effort and the games that work well on Windows/Linux machine don't necessarily run so well on tablet (because of control issues or hardware not being good enough)
If you want to play your old games, then you are better off with a Windows 8 tablet. Asus is releasing one that looks amazing and for a very reasonable price:

If you can wait, wait a little bit. The best (and cheapest) Windows 8 tablets are around the corner. After the release of the two new Surface models by Microsoft (probably tomorrow, Sep 23rd), I expect more Windows 8 tablets coming in.
short version to make it clear, if your wanting to play windows based games your looking at a windows based hybrid like those mentioned above that allow a pc based architecture and os with tablet features. Im toying with getting a surface when i get a chance to play with one.

A standard tablet wont allow you to pay those games (well normally), if your going basic android thats what your looking at for your applications.

i own a Samsung galaxy 2 tab and love the thing, its convenient etc but i could NEVER replace a laptop with a tablet there is just too many things that one cant do / make things too difficult to do.
sorry im really tired so not able to fully give you a decent reply!

e: typo!

Don't be too hasty to get rid of your laptop though, you might start missing it with the restrictions that a tablet puts onto you.

About the x86 Windows tablet, I recall hearing it eats the battery in no time. No personal experience with it though, I have only tried some ASUS Windows RT tablet before.
Have to agree with Timppu. I own a 7 inch tablet and at first I was ecstatic but then I realize it has a ton of limitations. But if you want one go get a tablet with USB OTG capability so you can plug wired keyboard or joystick to it.

Regarding game emulation with tablet I don't think Win 8 tablet can do that. Remember that Win 8 tablet is a closed environment like iPads. Android tablets allows non official apps and there's a ton of apps that emulate old games out there in the wilderness of Google.

Or better, go get a 10 or 12 or 13 inch laptop. You will get the best of both worlds. Portability of a tablet and usefulness of a laptop. Probably Lenovo Thinkpad or Asus EEE series.

Windows 8 tablets can run all the software desktop Windows can run, only the RT version has limitations, so running ScummVM or DsoBox isn't an issue there.
Tablets are great for reading in bed, watching movies in bed, checking email in bed....

But the touch-only interface is horrible for games, especially for games designed for mouse and/or keyboard. There's only so much accuracy you can get with a big honking finger, especially when the whole screen feels the same!

If I were you, I'd buy the tablet and keep the laptop. :)
Thank you all! I didn't expect so much answers and so quickly ;)

Ehehe yes grape1829, probably keeping the laptop might be the best idea when it comes to play some FPS... but not for this:

@Andanzas that Asus does look cool! But i'll wait yes, till Christmas probably.

So, everybody reject the Samsung tablet...

The problem with Samsung is that even when they are the best selling Android device out there they decided not to put 1080 hdmi screen on their tablets. Meanwhile several rivals already did that.
Do NOT get the Galaxy Tab 3. It's a big step back from the Tab 2 - go read reviews if you won't believe me. If you need an Android tablet, get the Asus EEE Transformer (you got different types) with a keyboard dock.

I'm still waiting for a proper hybrid which has a detachable keyboard but which runs Windows 8 desktop. This would make it ideal for retro gaming on the move.
This one looks good Red_Avatar, no?

@RedRagan thanks, i didn't know actually they weren't full HD. But having a Smart TV, my idea was to stream the content from tablet to TV, which i'm not even sure that it can be properly done... but that's another question.
I've seen those Asus Transformers as Android version in use and they're pretty neat devices. And thanks to the keyboards own battery you can get more battery life in it when it's docked in.

I was originally going to get a tablet for mobile small-business purposes, to swipe cards with my Square or Intuit card swipers or manage digital client documents on the go, but I too did research into tablets and found out that many are pointing to the Tab 2 being better than the Tab 3. I'm not usually one to go out of my way to get the newest design of an electronic anything, and seeing I've never owned a tablet and I'm trying to be economical, as well as get something that works, sticking with the Tab 2 seems like my safest bet.

I have though looked at Windows 8 tablets. The ASUS linked here is tempting, but not many card swipers work with Windows on the go, though there are some that work on Windows based PC's

The Tab 2 is now cheaper than Tab 3, and it's not like it's a huge step backwards; it came out in 2012. To me that's not ancient (my smart phone I got in 2012, and it's a 2010 design.

I'll stick with windows for my laptop for now until there's more variety and functionality with windows tablets, and I'll keep the tablet for business only stuff

Definitely don't get of your laptop quite yet, just as the others here mentioned. Keep that going strong alongside a tablet. With tab's it seems that convenience and mobility is taken before functionality and versality (something a laptop will be strong with for a bit longer). Eventually laptops and tablets will basically be the same thing with how technological trends are going, and perhaps even PC's; all computers may be able to be held in hand or docked on a keyboard or station for stability and ease of use (some already do). Until all computers are like this though, keep both the laptop and tablet strong!
