Ok, so I discovered today that if I play Guild Wars with Tarzan and Lion King music playing in the background it becomes one of the best games ever. Do any of you have your own custom playlists for specific games?
Also, I await your extensive reply, Keenan.
I played Dethklok in the background when I used to play Hellgate: London and Diablo.
I think that's pretty much it really.
As far as pc games go anyway.

Only for games that specifically support it. The only two that spring to mind are GTA:VC and GTA:SA. I play those two games with huge playlists of 80's and 90's hits, respectively.
I sometimes play Darkwind with Trololololo in the background. It's epic.
Also, at other times in Darkwind, I play MJ's old songs (Thriller, Billie Jean). Good catchy stuff.
I listen to music, namely from the 70s-90s, most of the time in the background unless the in-game music is excellent.
When I raided in vanilla WoW back in 2006, I played Rhapsody of Fire's music, e.g. Emerald Sword. It kept you going after dying at 3% after fighting the same boss for like 20 mins every encounter, every weekday night for a week or so.
Now I listen to Dawn of Victory also by Rhapsody when playing Hearts of Iron 3 as the Allies trying to destroy the Axis powers. Particularly epic, though the HOI's music soundtrack is already epic.
Their songs are all awesome for fantasy/RPG games etc.

I've been playing Beat Hazard a lot lately..
For some games, where music is minimal and the hours are long (for me, usually civilisation style games) I listen to the game's music for a while before switching over to a random playlist. Nothing specific, just to avoid hearing the same themes over and over.
No way! Games have their own "music" even if it's just some crazy noises coming from the PC speaker. And I stick to this even if it's unbearable. Contrariwise it would be like seeing a movie with some other ost in the background. Absurd....
Eve Online with Jean Michel Jarre is just epic!

I like your style :)
In my opinion...
WoW goes pretty well with trance (mostly Astral Projection) and some heavier variations of metal (HammerFall, Sonata Arctica, and other bands I cannot recall at the moment since I'm nowhere near my music collection).
Starcraft/Warcraft and HammerFall also fits each other like a glove on a hand (especially when playing Protoss/Orcs).
I usually find music too distracting when i play a game. The TA soundtrack is the only background music i listen to if im playing a game. It works well with lot of things.

Agree on that.
Except for MMOs, passed the first weeks/months of play.

Well, that's easy: just don't play MMOs, you'll use your time in a better way :-P
I only used to listen to my own music while playing Might and Magic 7.
The music was a mix of Nightwish, Within Temptation, MJ and maybe some random other songs.
