Spinorial: A person who cracks a binary has no legal rights to the product and is usually doing it against the product's licence.
A person who modifies code under licence has authorial rights as defined by the licence.
There's a world of difference.

F4LL0UT: That's of no relevance to the right to use the code that guy has written.
The right to use that code is governed by the licence! Any author has full copyright to any code they write, unless written under license that specifies otherwise!

That does not mean that the owner of the original files automatically gets distributional rights to all unauthorized derivatives, however. :P

The owner gets any distributional right not excluded by the licence. But that part is irrelevant because It's GOG who are doing the distributing, and it's his code that's being distributed. What a twist!

Venom: Hi Everyone,

I'd like to take a moment to clear up the situation. Yes, right now there are two games on GOG.com (The Witcher Adventure Game and Alien vs. Predator) that come bundled with our Galaxy Launcher application.

The reason behind this decision is that those two games use Galaxy multiplayer, and for it to work we need to provide a companion application to handle user authentication and auto-updating.

Eventually, those responsibilities will be handled by the Galaxy Client, which will be a separate, standalone and OPTIONAL application.

Once the Client is released, game installers will not bundle any additional launchers or other applications.

So the current situation (a launcher app bundled with your game installer) is only temporary, as we didn't want to provide the launcher as a separate download.

If you don't plan to play in multiplayer mode you can uninstall the launcher app and launch the game directly (the launcher is also optional, but it comes bundled with the game installer).
Thanks for confirming, good news indeed.

WeAreNotAlone: (For those that love STEAM and say it's not please post/PM me with instructions on how I can run STEAM games without it, and make a installer for the game(s) I have legally purchased that will do a "Fresh Install" of such games... without STEAM being present on target PC, nor target PC ever having game on it.)

Pheace: Or instead of having someone do the work for you you can just read up on past discussion on the topic. Posts by Jmich tend to be informative.
Appreciate the link, was aware of that thread in which a certain percentage of games once installed could be transferred to another directory and they still run. My experience has been the majority of games I've tried do NOT run when doing so.

In regards to a "installer" to clarify I don't need a "installer", I can copy and paste, create directories... the reference to a "installer" was "if" xyz game needs files outside the game directory that would not get copied by a simple copy and paste or if game (installer) makes a registry entry... that would not get copied over and would require researching the net to find out what files, and registry entries were needed. Ergo my reference to a installer.

The above aside the point of my prior post was I don't want GOG to move away from stand-alone installers at a future date once users have become "comfortable" with the GOG Galaxy Client.
My thoughts it will go to a forced auto-update model as happened with the poster I was responding to who experienced such already.
II can see a scenario in which Galaxy Client requires everyone to be at the same patch level, both the client and the game... then it's just a hop, skip and jump to the Galaxy Client being used to do installs, and stand-alone installers are done away with.

budejovice: I appreciate your post. I'm definitely not communicating as clearly as I had hoped. This isn't really about my experience last weekend, it's about extrapolating that experience. It's not about my past, it's about all of YOUR futures.

budejovice: Thank you for your response in this thread.
Yep, it's all about what the Galaxy Client may become.

My concern is say 2-3-5 yrs down the road Galaxy Client becoming "Steam like" in that installs are managed by it and stand-alone DRM free installers are done away with.

Such would make GOG more attractive to the minions of Steam users that are accustomed to "On-The-Fly" install method, thereby GOG pushing that as more customers, especially new ones=More money.

To be frank from a business standpoint long time customers which would be upset with Galaxy being used in a "Steam like" manner or it becoming a "Steam Clone" have a full library already and are unlikely to spent much more money with GOG, so I can see the Galaxy Client being used in a Steam like manner with the focus being on attracting new customers.
New customers are where's it's at vs the old timers who already have more games that they could ever play.
(Will GOG admit to such long range plans now? Nope...)

cataclism: i've read some posts from jmich and nowhere does he provide a way to do what he asks. He even admits the distribution method on Steam is not DRM-free, only the execution of the game is.

In order to install a DRM-free game on Steam you still need Steam for downloading it and installing it. If Steam closes or for some reason you lose access to your account you will never be able to install that game again, and copying the game files from a computer to another DOES NOT WORK. It's more complex than that.

This is a fundamental limitation that IS DRM in everyway, and there's really no way to deny this simple fact.

You want to prove Steam is DRM-free? Provide a way to install a game on a new computer, without Steam. You can't.

amok: old disucssion, really. You could also argue that gOg distribution is also DRM, as you need to log into your account to download the installer (and use third party software to download). When you have downloaded, you can move the installer to an offline PC an install.

With Steam you need to log into the Steam client to download the game, when you have downloaded you can (even zip the game if you want) and move the game to an offline PC.

The only difference is that gOg deliver an installer, and Steam "as is" - the value of each is in the eye of the beholder and not really part of DRM free or not.
.

Re: GOG distribution method is DRM because you need to log into your account to download a DRM FREE INSTALLER.

Having to log in to download a GOG installer via the web browser of your choice is nothing like the DRM Steam is, there are no DRM servers on the other end that must be up and running to authenticate the install.

Once GOG installer is downloaded, it's yours and no "net" /online connection is required.

Grand-kids could install the game.

Regarding STEAM games being moved to a offline PC/"zipping up the game" /the trick of moving games outside the Steam Directory... For the majority of games I've tried doing such only a handful will run, majority will NOT.

***********************************************************

*I don't think I have the correct number of "great, great, great"(s) to cover 10,000, years... So use your imagination to adjust +/- as needed.

Point is once you download a GOG game installer... it does not have to obtain authorization from a DRM server.
