If my memory serves me right, it was stipulated that the depiction of Nazi-symbols in a historically correct way in movies depicting the events of that era is allowed, but as soon as there is some sort of interactivity, it changes to 'not allowed'. Mind you, this is from memory and also second-hand information from a German friend of mine.
@wishbone
a) they shouldnt be but generally are, see and compare the movies "sophie scholl" and "downfall", to games like essentially any game with nazis in them. maybe there exists an intelligent game out there analyzing world war 2 that i dont know about, but i'd like to play it possibly.
b) a nazi action figure, or the wolfenstein series (i.e. robo-hitler) certainly would be and are trivializing the subject
@Stonebro
technically the swastika is not "banned" it simply has restricted use. i.e. Germans can't wave the swastika flag as they can in the US, or they can't produce nazi songs as they do in many scandinavian countries. its use is strictly reserved now to the critical/analytical sphere as seen in documentaries and movies coming out of Germany.
lol did you copy that list straight out of wikipedia? according to the wikipedia article ALL those you listed ARE banned lol

stonebro: * The swastika
* The death's head symbol (concentration camp units), basically a skull & crossbones
* The SS bolts (two lightning-like runes used to decorate SS uniforms)
* The Wolfsangel
* The Runic alphabet
* The Sun Cross and the Celtic Cross
* The eagle (usually depicted atop a swastika though, like in the nazi party symbol, the Parteiadler)

Yeah, they're all banned. Along with a lot of pre-war Nazi flags and songs.

No, I just listed the most common nazi symbols I could think of off the top of my head. I wasn't aware that they were all actually banned. Even the Runic alphabet? That's the most non-nazi point on the list, it's just an alphabet. It's not it's fault that Hitler took a liking to it.
The eagle is obviously not banned, just the common symbols that used the eagle in nazi symbology. Like the nazi party emblem.

What!? If I go to Germany I am going to buy a shirt with a celtic cross and wear it. If they try to tell me that I can't I will say I am being persecuted for my Irish and Welsh (celtic) roots.

As far as I unterstand, it is illegal to wear in a stilised form, except if it has no connection to the national socialistic scene, see BGH press release at http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diskussion:Keltenkreuz#Isoliertes_Verwenden_eines_stilisierten_Keltenkreuzes_grundsätzlich_strafbar
No information about the cross itself, though, but from the missing template on the picture sites I'd think it's legal to wear as long as there's no connection to national socialism (i.e. neonazis).
So basically the government of Germany has become swastika nazis about the swastika being in games and other media NOT gloryfying the Nazi movement??
"No swastika for YOU!"
*Swastika nazi is a parody of the Jerry Seinfeld show's "Soup Nazi" character(disclaimer). Also, bolded for emphasis that it's the government not the people I am talking about...

In 1998, they even have become grammar nazis. :-)

Michagogi23: Snippity.

My apologies. I forgot to put the word 'government' after Germany's.
Didn't mean to offend EVERY German. That would include me. =P

stonebro: This is amazingly accurate coming from a 16-year old american boy to be honest.
It was probably just luck. :P

I love you, too! =P
No, our class was given a project over Germany in which we were to explore the cultural impact of the Swastika to the West thanks to the Nazi Party, so I did a ton of research. =)

Here's a cultural impact for you.
Nazi Germany influenced the West into becoming clandestine totalitarians, because if you're open about it - well.. Majority of them get invaded, and ultimately sent to the gallows, and the people remain oppressed because of foreign occupation. The end.

I'm just saying this thread has gone fairly offtopic.
