Poulscath: I'm pretty sure there's already texture packs for Hexen (and possibly Heretic) for the replacement game engines. It's been a while since I checked so google is your friend here.
Someone is remaking(or rebooting) Hexen as a Doom 3 mod, actually. It looks good, actually, and I can't wait for it to be finished.

Blarg: No, there was an original heretic before the first Hexen.
No I meant I liked the coloring of Hexen even if it was bland. I also played Heretic.....and most of the game's expansions.

I've played Heretic and Hexen both quite a bit since I got the id/Bethedesa pack on sale last year and they are fun. Sadly though Hexen 2 and Return to Castle Wolfenstein won't work for me.

Heretic was the only Doom-engine game that came close to capturing the same kind of greatness as its predecessor. Too bad it never got nearly as popular. Strife was another really good one that I'd love to see on GOG one of these days.

Get the originals, run them on third-party enhanced engines (that add true 3D, true lighting etc.), then add high-res texture packs, 3D models, perhaps even high-def sound to the mix.

You actually can run Heretic 1 and its expansion, Hexen 1 and its expansion, and Strife through Zdoom. That's a much better alternative than using dosbox, since you get better graphics, more features (if you want them) etc. They'll probably work with the various other modern doom emulators as well.

Hexen 2 and Heretic 2 don't work with it though, since they're based on a different engine.

they were always interesting games for me but never realy played them.if they show up on gog will certanly try them

If anyone is interested, I recently found a way to play Heretic II on Windows 7 64bit:

- install game

- install patch / Enhanced Pack 1.06

- install glide wrapper (nGlide) [optional, since the game also runs with OpenGL or Software]

- erase the following dll files from the game folder:

\heretic2\a3dapi.dll
\heretic2\A3DSnd.dll

- ADDITION: Game has to be started from inside the game folder. Starting it via a desktop shortcut results in a ctd when the first level is loaded.

- play the game :)

The last two parts are crucial. Without erasing those two dll files the game always crashed for me after the introduction, before the actual game graphics is loaded.

Hexen was such a cool game back in the day. The graphics were insane, and I loved the sound effects. Certainly wouldn't mind giving it another whirl.

I love the gameplay of Hexen but I hate the level design. I played the demo of Heretic 2 and really enjoyed it, and was quite surprised when I saw that it among the other games wasn't on Steam.

Yeah, come to think of it I do remember running around the levels for hours, completely confused as to where to go.

It's the hub design. I like the idea of a hub where you can choose which levels you go to first, and that's a complete level, and then you go onto another level, and so on. I found there was too much crossover in Hexen, at least in the first hub. I spent hours trying to figure out how to open a door in one area, before I spent hours checking the other levels to see if I could find something there. I got past the first hub once, and then lost my save data somehow, and haven't been able to bring myself to try to slog through it again.

Then you should definitely not play Hexen 2. That game requires you to search every inch of every wall to find secret passages to progress.

Wow your crazy. I suggest a simple alternative before you give away all these games. Hexen and Herectic can be copied out of steam and used with ZDoom, a source port which allows you to run hexen, doom, wolfenstein and herectic (not Hexen II though) on newer hardware without the need of dosbox. No steam client running required either.

Well I just don't like to use STEAM anymore because of what they have done to me and that was when I was trying to buy a game they deleted it of the store so I was just pissed off that I can't buy that game.
