In light of the recent digital release of Disney Infinity 2.0, with its $6 dollar characters list the worst exampe of DLC you have come across. Mine is is the one I just mentioned.

Disney Infinity is taking the same route based on the Skylander's game. This means you can buy the game but you need to buy little miniatures in order to play the characters, which is a form of DRM. This is very much Ubisoft's referencing of making a $60 customer into a $200 customer...

And that's why i'll never play Skylanders or Infinity...
all dlc is horrible

the practise of cutting up a game in its components selling half the game for 60 then the secodn half in bits and pieces for 20 a pop and then extra costumes and charcters for incidential prices is insidious disgusting and preposterous

used to eb a time when you unlocked content liek that instead of buying it
when i hand over 60 notes i expect my game to be complete nto to be a dlc frame work

dlc is wone of the worst things that ever happend to gaming and i loath it
Most DLC is horrible as it doesn't add much and costs more than it's worth. Especially when it's content that has been cut out of the main game which they nevertheless sell for the full price.
Some DLC is just useless crap like player outfits and such which should be free or user generated content.

I miss the old days where you had add-ons which were actually worth their money. I remember playing C&C games and waiting for the add-ons to come. Add-ons like Yuri's Revenge for C&C RA 2.

IMHO DLC should be what add-ons were. Leave all the other stuff to the creativity of the community.
Unfortunately it seems enough people are willing to pay money for crap, making it profitable to make and sell it.

dlc as it is right now ( a naked cash grab ) makes me want to vomit

and i dont buy dlc if i own dlc its because it came in the inevitable game fo the year\deluxe\supreme\ultimate pack i tend to wait for those
Add-ons were a way to extend the game in its length (new missions, units...) or its gameplay, or just the story. Now, DLC are just parts of game code which were removed from the main game to justify to pay again to have the mention "Complete Edition", "Gold" or "GOTY" !

I think "DLC" is too broad of term to speaking that way. Big (free) updates are called DLC these days as well.
Stuff that would have been called expansion packs are now called DLC too.

Certainly the "cashing DLC" are kinda group of their own and i assume 99% people always mean those when they just speak about "DLC".

I mean DLC = downloadable content. Its like super broad.
i tend to call expansion packa expansion packs download only or not

the cashing in superfluous dlc garbage is loathsome though and they hurt video gaming more then they help

making everything monitized maximum amount of profit for minimum amoutn of effort and we are already heading towards that

you should probably think of them as different category of game-toys or something.

Like say warhammer miniatures - to play, you got to own them in the first place. Depending on how its really done, i see it as very "natural" way of combining games and toys.

Just talking in general, i dont really know anything about the pricing or games or even whether the "toys" have values as physical toys.

This. DLC is just shit that wasn't originally included in the initial release.

they arent toys they are statues
bricks
plasticine statues about 5 cm high

and while kids with enough fantasy can make something of that as an actual toy skylanders and infinity figures lack even basic articulation

oldschool: This. DLC is just shit that wasn't originally included in the initial release.
quickie example: http://www.playinsurgency.com/forums/topic/3950-hunt-dlc-update-august-4-2014/

Free DLC. Content update adding stuff in the manner many games did already long long time ago, except its now called "DLC update".

Maybe someone should lay down formal rules for the terms or something.

---

There are atleast:

-"Ripoff DLC", content cut and made day 1 dlc.
-Expansion DLC, like the one i linked.
-"Cheat DLC", dlc that empowers your character and could be considered really cheat.
-Soundtracks are atimes called dlc as well.
-Money-milking dlc, basically more of the same gameply for 1-2h for xx€.
.
.
.
Some cost money, some are free, some are pre-order, but every single one of them is called "DLC" while still being very different things.
I'm taking a meh attitude towards all sorts of things that add content to a base game for money.

It's all in what I think it's worth. If I think the base game is worth the cost I buy it and then pay for the extra content if the pricing is right.

Honestly it's a bit like GOG's thinking to combat piracy. Sell your products for a price people think is fair and all sorts of problems suddenly gets diminished. Turn that around to you purchasing only what you think have a fair price. The thinking goes both ways.

I'm starting to get a little tired of people going on crusades about products that are not essential for their living (Housing, food, transportation and so on.) they feel is overpriced. Just don't buy the darn thing or wait until it drops in price. That's the only realistic way to deal with it because products will always teeter on the brink of being affordable. It's basic business.
Save yourself the aggravation. You'll feel much better. :)

Well, maybe they will make em more toylike and durable in the future. I do think they are aimed at kids so it would make sense to me.

I used to get Action Force (GI Joe) figures when i was small. If it had been possible to make them appear on Amiga/C64 it would have been too cool. well, we did have this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBqy9fTBV2c

I avoid the series for the same reason, and it's a huge shame, because I was a big Spyro fan back before they used his name to draw attention to their Skylanders series when it first started.

I'm not sure if you guys have heard, but if you think that 6 dollars for figurine physical DLC for a game is bad, then you should take a look at those Amiibo figures that Nintendo is pushing really hard right now. They're $12.99 each, and their functionality so far includes the following: A computer player that levels up in Super Smash Bros; a costume for your Mii character in Mario Kart 8; and an in-game item/weapon in Hyrule Warriors. The figures are supposed to be usable across multiple games, but the problem is that it's been said that the figures can only write data for one game at a time. To further make things worse, 3 of the Amiibo figures are exclusives to different stores; Gamestop has the rights to Shulk; Metaknight to Bestbuy, and there was one other to a completely different store.

The worst part about all of those figures is that we all know that simple features like characters, costumes, and trainable computer players are all do-able without the stupid figures. There was an old N64 game called Dual Heroes, which perhaps wasn't the greatest fighting game of all time, but it featured a training robot that would learn how to fight slowly by mimicking what you did. After training it, you could choose to have it play in your stead in the arcade battle mode, or against other players, or another player's robot; which is exactly what the Amiibo in Super Smash Bros 4 does. So, not only is it not a new idea that hasn't been done before, but it has it been included in a game for free in the past, as well. The only reason that Nintendo is doing this now is because Activision proposed a deal with Nintendo involving the Skylanders series, and Nintendo turned it down because they didn't think it would go anywhere. Two years later, Skylanders has, unfortunately for the consumer, been very successful, and so they're jumping on the bandwagon now.

Unfortunately, I've seen a lot of people in comment sections of other sites talking about how they're going to buy Amiibo figures just for display without even using them, which means that the trend may not go away for a while yet if sales end up being good. I hope that it ends as soon as possible, though, because I hate the idea of potentially buying a game, and having content locked behind a cheap plastic figure that is worth enough money to buy a whole game with instead. A racing costume is not worth 15 dollars; it's "horse armour" DLC all over again.

I do hope that the Scammibos and Scamlanders trends don't last long.
