My girlfriend will be traveling abroad within a month. During this time, she will have limited internet access. For whenever these periods arise, I am going to supply her with a handful of games that are good for passing the time.

My plan is to load them up on a thumb drive and mail them to her. I'm doing it this way because I want to have it gift-wrapped. I've read the GOG installation guide and I am assuming this is not a problem in either a legal or technical sense. If I'm mistaken, please correct me.

Barring that, what are your suggestions? I am already planning on getting her Heroes of Might & Magic 3, along with Diablo 2 (I know it's not on GOG, but she's never played it, and that's just criminal). So that's a turn-based RTS and an action-RPG. I don't think she would enjoy anything too technical, such as a simulation or Civilization-type game.

Thanks for your help.
Baldur's Gate
Planescape Torment
Syberia

Just to name a few.

EDIT: Oh, how about Fallout 1 and 2? :)

What games does she currently own and like playing? Without an idea of that you'll just end up with 1001 lists of games which might be miles from her interest areas or repeats of games she owns already.

Good point.

She doesn't play a whole lot of older games. Honestly, this has a lot more to do with price than anything else.

She has an extensive game library, so I'm not going to bother making an extensive list of what she owns.

She spends a lot of time playing MMOs (yeah, I know).
Also she mostly enjoys FPSs, but those aren't notorious for taking up a lot of time.
She also has a few puzzle and strategy games.

I got Diablo 2 for its sense of collection and progression, along with the action. I felt that was fairly analogous to the sense of enjoyment one gets from MMOs.

Masters of Orion 2, that is all. You can play it endlessly. Lords of the Realm II (available in the Lords of the Realm Royal Edition on GOG) will keep you busy for ages.

Tower Defense games are great for this too: Defense Grid or Plants Vs. Zombies, neither are GOG games but they are cheap enough and I think available without DRM in some cases.
Minecraft would be a good timesink suggestion - though I think you need to register online at least once for that game to activate. However once in the game is good for singleplayer and later can open up into a new kind of multiplayer (ie something not centred around level grinding and such).

After that good timesinks will depends a lot on her - if she's not playing a lot of older games then some classics might not catch her attention. Oddly I've also got my mind stuck in turn based timesink mode (I don't know why);
Master of Orin 2 is the classic turnbased space empire sim - dated in graphics, but not too far beyond most people ability to grow to like it

A bit more modern (and currently on offer but not for much longer) is Disciples 2 - though if you are limited on save space then Disciples 1 would be a similar featured game but with a smaller install size. Turnbased fantasy strategy game.

RTS wise Dark Reign 2 and Stronghold Crusaders would be my suggestions - mostly because they've sunk the most amount of my time from GoG purchases/owned games.

Baldurs Gate series is also a great time sink if she likes RPG games and more deep strategy than the simple hack and slash affairs - both present a much bigger challenge to the player than your typical hack and slash will. Arcanum is also a deep game and I'd rank a little deeper in the complexity of the interface and features; its graphics sitting somewhere between BG1 and BG2
Recettear is really cute RPG item shop simulator with story. There is also some optional dungeon crawling (for stuff to sell) for variety. I think it's good for at least 20 hours. You can get it DRM-free from Gamersgate and I think Impulse.

You can get the demo here:

Broken Sword series perhaps, good story and characters. Still Life if she does not mind a bit of horror or the beautiful Syberia series.
Not exactly what your girlfriend is going for but Gabriel Knight and The Longest Journey. They are both puzzle adventure games like Monkey island or King's Quest. (not sure what kind of guide or whatever they may offer on GOG. a guide might be recessionary for Gabriel Knight and The Longest journey since the puzzles get frustrating at times.)

Ni ether game is complicated to play. Both have good stories. And both are fairly long games. Gabriel Knight can be a bit frustrating near the end though.

Gabriel Knight is an excellent murder mystery that takes place in New Orleans and is just well written and fun.

The Longest Journey is a game that takes place a bit in the future with a seemingly normal art student who ends up going back and forth from earth and to a fantasy world solving puzzles and trying to figure out what the heck is going on.

Also not here, but if your girlfriend wants an awesome long first person game, she should get Deus Ex which I think is available on other sites. (sorry but this game is probably one of the best games ever made and a equal is coming out soon for it anyways. Hopefully eventually Deus Ex will be here as well...)
Sacred Gold is on sale. Can't go wrong there.

Serious Sam, Painkiller, Duke Nukem, and Blood?
Wizardy IV ought to be a goooooood timesink :D

Or you can have her play Wizardry VI-VII-VIII with a single party play-through...

On the note of Minecraft, Terraria is also a good alternative. You can download the files through Steam and use the RomTerraria launcher to play the game sans Steam. You might need an internet connection to install XNA runtimes and whatnot, but maybe not. Two installers for these are included in the Terraria folder itself, and saves are stored in "/My Documents/My Games/Terraria"

MGShogun: Serious Sam, Painkiller, Duke Nukem 3D, and Blood?

Now I don't think these have been said yet:
Divine Divinity
Space Rangers 2
Dungeon Keeper
Ghost Master Cheap right now :D
Far Cry
Freedom Force VS. The 3rd Reich
Gothic games
Jagged Alliance Games On sale too :)
Kings Bounty: The Legend
The Last Express She's traveling so this may be a fun one for her
MOTO Racer 2
Outcast
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six
Total Annihilation
The Witcher
ETCCCCC....
Sorry for any repeats, I think all those games are worth at least glancing at, some offer fast thrills, some take a bit more thinking, but all are, I think, great games that can burn a lot of time, and all are on GOG =)
If she's into strategy games at all, there are some good choices on GOG that can eat up a loooooooooooooot of time.

HOMM III comes to mind immediately. Easy to pick up buthard to master with it's unit balance. And a whole lot of campaigns to play through that range from pathetically easy to challenging not to mention the random map generator and premade scenarios.
