Some screenshots have shown up

It's... it's.... it's set in the 1950s...
And looks a bit cartoony.
One of the kotaku commenters implied it looked like Destroy All Humans where you're playing as the humans, seems about right.
Still hoping for something good though
WHAT HAVE THEY DONE?!!!!
Bit cartoony, 50s, fps
Haven't you been paying attention?
What shooters has this team made, by the way? They say "We're really good at making shooters", but as far as I'm aware the only one they've done is Bioshock 2.
Apart from that, I'm staying cautious. The game sounds like it might be good, but then again it's better to expect something bad and be pleasantly surprised if it turns out to be good than the alternative, imho.
that provides a unique opportunity to present XCOM in a much more immersive and intimate format.

Oh boy here we go again. That whole "first person = immershun" argument once more.
By the way, more screenies here: http://www.gamesradar.com/xbox360/xcom/screenshots/g-2010050715180181032

I do like the idea behind this game... there are certainly many interesting elements, not least the alien design.
But it's not X-Com.
My two main worry points are the base parts being too far dumbed down, and the AI being terrible. Proof that the AI will be poor seems to be in the gamesradar article, where it mentions the AI-controlled agents being dead very quickly. No real insight for the base yet.
And finally, it worried me how it said "heads a secret taskforce" and then said "The alien presence grows and grows the longer you stay"... How exactly are you secretive when there is so much destruction?

Ouch! My eyes! My eyes!! The horror, the HORROR!!
Not sure if it is the PC Gamer UK article or not, but it IS Alec Meer.

Honestly, my hopes are getting higher. While I really don't like the blob-alien concept, that Titan at the end sounds like it could be fun. And the escalating nature of the missions is definitely something I would prefer to the "Chase a single alien around for twelve minutes" nature of the "real" XCOMs.
But it DOES look like they get the concept right. The atmosphere, if not the actual gameplay.
It looks like a reskinned Bioshock.

I love that concept of stay as long as is feasible then cut and run. And the evidence to take back to prove the aliens are a threat. That's actually brilliant, problem is like all games before they come out the idea is brilliant and 100% of the time the execution is not quite as well thought out or done as the plans. I'm not expecting much, but I do hope it actually ends up being like they stated in this article.
Also anyone notice that the XCom projects like Xenocide and all seem to be going nowhere and slowing down? At least here we have a company playing with the license, we got a chance of getting something good or at least something shiny.

To be honest with you, if this was called something different then I'd almost be looking forward to it right now. It's only the fact that, after Enforcer and Interceptor, this is really whacking big, hefty nails into the coffin of hope for another true XCOM.
The only remaining hope could be that this is merely the first game in this revamp. That once they've had some success with this, they'll expand upon it with a sequel that features full strategic and management options in between first person squad based tactical missions.
But by abandoning strategy and management in this game, never mind the tactical aspect of the missions, does make me doubt whether they even have the first clue about what makes the true XCOM games classics.

Enforcer and Interceptor weren't enough nails?
Almost 10 years without even being touched wasn't enough nails?
Seriously, XCOM has been dead for a while. The best we have had were both flavors of UFOs (After* and ET)
Let me just say this: We all saw (and laughed) when NMA went from being haters of Fallout 3 to pretty big fans. Do you really want to be in the same boat? Give it a chance. You don't have to touch yourself at night to it, but you can at least not assume it is going to be pure garbage until we know more.

What I'm saying is, dodgy use of an old IP aside, it could actually be good in its own right. Naturally there's not enough to go on at the moment. Far too many factors could kill it. Lack of control over your squad and/or poor squad AI would certainly be enough to finish it off.
