Because if it is, I am fascinated and at the same time frightened. Maybe people born and raised in Japan can get this kind of stuff, but there's something very off-putting about the canned nature of some of it that makes me believe that even if I were born and raised in Japan, I would never, ever get used to it.
Fuck Kotaku.
Is this a fucking thesis?

Pretty long, huh? It's also pretty disorganized. I'm coming to points that look like they belong before or after points that came ten minutes ago.
Without even looking at the link, if it's a Tim Roger's "article", don't waste your time with his inane ramblings.
Cry me a fucking river.
I live in the US, and there are tons of shit I don't like about living here, but they aren't shallow things like "Too many people smoke" or "There's too much meat in food" or "I HATE PACHINKO"
I was expecting a little something deeper from the paper, but the guy just sounds like a pussy.
EDIT: I have no clue who the hell Tim Rogers is, so forgive me if I don't "get it".

Wow, you're good at that! Yes, it is one of his articles, and this one is probably the longest I've seen from him. It would be easier to read if all his points weren't strewn across, and if he ditched some of his less legitimate complaints, like the meat and pachinko thing, and kept the strange business practices and the traditional greetings. It's the latter topics that fascinated me, because I love learning the way cultures differentiate from others, and the idea of a country so unique gets my attention. It's like an entirely different world to me, and it makes me really want to visit Japan. Probably the opposite of what he was trying to achieve by writing it all, but that's the effect it had on me.

He's a whiny little **** who can't write a coherent article to save his life but insists on rambling on far too long. Honestly, any time I try to read any of his crap I wind up feeling like inventing a device with which I could punch him via the Internet.
But based on your comment, it sounds like that this time, he's whining because Japan isn't his home country and as such he can't buy the things he's used to. Yeah sure, that can get a little annoying. I'd love to be able to buy a Cornish pastie. But instead of whining about how people in Japan don't eat the same food, I just started making my own =)
Sure. Japan is not a great place for foreigners. They don't really want us here. As a result, unless you're a permanent resident (nigh on impossible to get that status these days) or a naturalized citizen, you'll never get a credit card, bank loan or anything else connected to money in that fashion. Landlords won't want to rent apartments to you and some companies may be less willing to hire you.
The problem here, is that most Japanese companies assume that foreigners are "bad people" and will simply amass great debts before fleeing the country. Doesn't help that the police used to use posters only depicting foreigners for all their anti-crime drives.

While I haven't been to Japan, my university forces me to choose an area of study that I have to do on top of my major. I picked Asian Studies. I also take Japanese language classes as well, so my focus is primarily on Japan for Asian Studies. I am well aware of racism in Japan, as well as the various cultural differences. I know how my race and country affect my status in the country, but I still don't mind studying it, or even going there someday, or even working for a Japanese company. But if I do, I know I'll have to keep an open mind regarding it.
The guy just sounds like a complete douche who would rather whine how everything doesn't fit whatever random choice he's made in his life. I don't smoke but I'm not going to whine how everyone in a country smokes. I can't eat a whole lot of different foods because of allergies, but I'm not going to force my choice on everyone.
The guy can seriously go screw himself.
So he doesn't like it there any more. Any bets on how long it'll take him to pack up his crap and leave?

Never. He's like the people who bitch and moan about how horrible starbucks coffee is yet continue to go there every day despite there being many other options out there.

much like people who bitch endlessly about windows but never even try linux
tl;dr
Copied it into Open Office Writer. At size 6 font, it's about 17 pages. And yes, that size is pretty much too small to be legible unless you zoom in. Meaning on normal paper, this thing, readable, is within 20-25 depending on the font used.
So is there a cliff notes for this?
