Back in the day, when we owned our games on discs bought in stores, I personally never thought about backups, copying the CDs, etc. I just took care of my game discs/boxes and that was that. I still have all those game boxes with all contents in my bedroom closet of my parents' home.
Nowadays, with digital-based computing, I feel obligated to having two backup copies of DRM-free games, not including the copy that can be accessed from retailer (e.g. GOG). For example, I burn GOG games and bonus content to discs while also backing them up onto a hard drive. I don't have a large library so this is manageable.
But it's sort of weird and interesting to think about how, with digital distribution, it's easier and often cheaper to buy games. Thus, we buy more of them. And the more "stuff" you have, the more places you need to put that "stuff".
Just some random thought I had.
