The bad part about hand held puzzles is that once you figure them out you are done with them, the exception being rubix cubes and its clones.

I do love brain teasers as well, my brother is really into the physical puzzles (and far better at solving them than me ;)
You might wanna get him a Chinese puzzle box, if he doesn't already own one. They can be really tricky to solve, and if you want you could put some little extra present inside... so it's essentially a really cool gift wrap.
