tinyE: Well a lot of this is probably due to my shitty OS but I thought #2 just looked and sounded bad. There was a polish and flow to #1 that #2 didn't have, like I was playing 1st draft of something.
It doesn't count as a review but its the clearest and most honest way I can put it :
2 has none of 1's magic. What the magic is exactly I don't know, but 1 has it...
Sorry for maybe derailing this topic, but do you guys remember how there were (supposedly, at least according to critics at the time) a whole bunch of C&C clones in the mid to late 90's?
I'd love to see a compiled list of all of them, many of them have been forgotten (sometimes for a reason). Let's maybe start with defining C&C clones/Westwood style RTS games, which I think are slightly different than Blizzard style RTS games - they usually have a side bar where you access your building options at all times, regardless of your selected structure, and there's usually no explicit maximum unit count/supply limit (though there is of course a hard limit, due to computer resources, but it's often set at a pretty high point you're unlikely to reach within a regular match of the game, C&C had 100 units per side as I recall, Total Annhilation about 500), instead of limiting your army sizes the games limit the speed at which you can expand, by having structure upkeep/maintenance/power (and sometimes limiting where you can build by forcing you to construct new buildings close to your existing ones, until you unlock the MCV/base building vehicle farther down the tech tree - not like in Blizzard games where you have the ability to build expansion bases all over the place with your starter builder units), and your tech progression lies in building prerequisite structures instead of researching your way through tech trees.
The most obvious of these I know of are the Dark Reign and Krush Kill 'n Destroy games, and I'd probably count 7th Legion, Total Annihilation, M.A.X., Warzone 2100 and Armor Command, even though they vary the formula a bit in various ways.
I've also seen Dark Colony, Napalm: The Crimson Crisis, Dominion: Storm over Gift 3 and Battle Commander mentioned as C&C clones, but I haven't played either of them.

Even if we most likely will never see most of these games released on GOG, I'd just love to have a list of the ones that were made, in these days of MOBA:s, tower defense games and Blizzard style games, neither of which I enjoy as much.

I've probably played them all. :P
If I missed it forgive me but I really enjoyed the Act of War games. Army Men RTS was probably the best looking I ever played unfortunately it focused too much on speed and that killed it for me. WW3 Black Gold is basically the Earth series with an army wrapper but still fun.

And as I'm typing this I notice no one has brought up Ground Control 1 & 2. How sad.

fisk0: ... Dark Colony ...
Oh I'd love to see that game on gog, but I don't think it really qualifies as a CnC clone - especially the base building. Damned difficult game for me though :P

I've been playing Populous: The Beginning for the past few days. I could never get past the third level as a kid, so this is some kind of revenge. It's too bad that the game can be so revoltingly difficult and unintuitive at times, but still it's nothing like anything I've ever seen before.

awesome game! I still remember the sheer glee of lobbing enemy shamans into bodies of water with a well placed fireball :D
That's one game that can really kick your ass though. I wish there were WASD camera controls along with unit groups and hotkey controls. That would make the game much easier.
It is though, and there are a handful of truly difficult levels. However, long as the game is, it never got monotonous. I straigt out enjoyed the hell out of it until the end. As far as I remember there were control groups. Check out this site : http://wiki.popre.net/Keyboard_Shortcuts
