I generally find that I don't like games made after films because most of the time they are a rushed affair who's only intent is to cash in on the short term post movie release market. A handful manage to generate longer success (Lord of the Rings and Starwars franchises come to mind).

Also a lot of the games tend to be, well, very much follow the leader as you play out the exact story that you saw in the films. Few ever go far enough to actually consult the book source from the film (most films have a book source somewhere) to enhance things.

In other news - I'd really really like them to re-licence the Battle for Middle Earth series of games. I never did get a chance to get the second and its expansion (kept putting it off) and now its mostly gone from any market because the licence is up.
Willow was the most expensive game I had ever bought when I bought it. It was for my 10th bday and I had $30 to spend. Good times.

And that's still a fairly fun game. Zelda-esque in many ways.

Also, I have played War in the North. I really enjoyed it -- far more than I expected from the reviews. But it is true that it's essentially a hack-fest where the monsters just don't quit coming until long after you're tired of fighting them. Sort of like Monty Python humor in that way.
I wouldn't like an MMORPG even IF it was Lord of the rings. but otherwise, there was this rpg that was LOTR that came out for the xbox a while back, I played that one and rememebr thinking it was a masterpeice! I want to see more of that style of gaming in the LOTR licence!

or how about this one:

FRODO GOES TO THE MOON

that would sell like hotcakes, in the opening scene: frodo's nekad butt, pans left to see the moon, and frodo says "I have to reach the moon, and moon you all from there!" thus the journey begins!
Lord of the Rings certainly has a lot of varied games and many of them are pretty good. I wish they had a few more RPGs in LOTR setting but I imagine its a nightmare to get the licence.

Willow was pretty cool, it was unique and enjoyable but I don't think we need to pump any more money into LucasArts, provided George Lucas retained that licence. Gods, copyright law sucks.

It's not too bad; It's one of WoW's main competitors.

ashout: who thinks the lord of the rings games are awsome,
Battle for middle-Earth was awesome. The rest, not so much.
avatar
ashout: and more important, who thinks there should be MORE lord of the rings stuff?
Star Wars. More Star Wars, specially space simulators.

can't argue with you there, star wars is golden if they do it right. it has all the elements of a fantasy game AND a science fiction game rolled into one!
Ha, I remeber enjoying Third Age a bunch back in the day. I'm sure it wouldn't fare well on today's standards, but I think I'll want to find out if the stuff about fighting the eye of Sauron on the tower is true -- because if it is, I can't decide if it is awesome or ridiculous.

Other than that, I've only briefly experienced the official movie games. I do recall them as solid and very linear action games, but I might be dead wrong.

I've been intending to try LotRO, but I fear MMORPGs as a time sink. I can take most games that take time given there is the chance of an epic plot (intentional or unintentional), but online games tend to equalize players so that I never feel like anything special in there. (Except in an arguably negative sense -- I tend to do characters that just do stuff they are not supposed to, just to feel different. I hate it when I need to do just the right thing to prosper, gather just the right gear and so on. I want to have fun on my own terms. But this is all beside the point, really)
I'd like to see a game based on the Cube series of films.

TheSupremeForce: I thought The Two Towers and Return of the King were surprisingly good, especially by movie tie-in standards. The Battle for Middle Earth games were solid. The Third Age seemed like it had some good ideas, but I never actually finished it.

I was tempted a few times to try LotRO, but never pulled the trigger. I've never actually played any MMO's anyway.
LOTRO is actually a good game. A few friends of mine signed up for a life-time membership a few years ago. I only played it for over a year. However, I don't know how the game is today, due to the game going free to play (F2P).

There is also War of the Ring, which is based on the books.
I loved Lord of the Rings: The Third Age. I also played the hell out of the Two Towers and Return of the King games.

I hear Interplay's Lord of the Rings Vol. I and II were quite good RPGs. I'd love to try them out, but nobody sells those anymore... Ya hear that, GOG?
