This has not been a good week for Max. I've been stuck for a solid week on Ch. 4 where Max is on the falling water tank and has to shoot 5 guys on the rooftop below. At first I was afraid my key/mouse chops weren't good enough. Although I could kill the 5 guys, watch them fall to the ground and drop their weapons, yet still... there's always a guy that walks up to Max and shoots him in the head!

So I went out and bought a Microsoft XBox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows. It works great. I set up Hard Lock, Easy Aim, Easy Mode, and now I can press the Left Fire button to auto-cycle between all 5 guys and kill them all in about 2 seconds flat. After I shoot the 5th and final guy, I keep hitting the Left Fire just to make sure there are NO MORE enemies to auto-aim, and indeed there are no more enemies to kill. They're all dead!

And yet... there's always SOMEBODY (usually in a brownish-red jacket) that walks up to Max and shoots him in the head. DEAD. Every stinking time.

So the question occurs to me... is there something ELSE you're supposed to do here? Like... should I be "running forward" or hitting a "jump button" or some OTHER action? Max always catches the edge of the wall when he falls, arms over the edge, the rest of his body dangling over the alleyway below. I have restarted and replayed this entire rooftop level twice more, and it's always the same ending. I can NOT proceed past this spot.

NOTE: I've watched several YouTube videos of this sequence, and it seems in all the ones I've seen, there are 6 guys on the roof, not 5 like in my game. I've compared their positions, and the "extra guy" that is missing in my version is the guy in the upper-right of the screen. Could I have a bug that prevents 6 guys from showing up?

Every day I pick up the game and try to get past this scene, but I cannot. Luckily when I start the game it starts EXACTLY as Max is falling, so there's nothing else to replay at this point. I have to get past this 10 second sequence or I cannot ever play the game again!

Anyone have any suggestions? Much appreciated!
I don't remember doing anything special there.

Watch a let's play on youtube maybe?
Go to a previous saved game if you can, and try to do it again, maybe it's just a bugged saved game.

Go through the level again would work too, that scene is not far from the start of that level.

I uninstalled it long ago so I can remember if there were 5 or 6 guys, but it wasn't that hard even on the highest dificulty so maybe it's just a bug.

Hope it helps.

Good idea. I watched one that showed up when I googled "max payne 3 water tower" and there were 6 guys on the roof, one more than I see. The "extra" guy is the one in the upper right, that looks like he's coming from behind the stairway exit. I guess I have a bug. I've replayed (RESTART) the level 3 times and still only see 5 guys.

I tried changing the difficulty and replayed the level, hoping maybe 6 guys would show up on a harder level, but it's always just 5. What's frustrating is... I can't even ask someone for a savegame I don't think! I think the saves are tied to your account/DRM so I'm really screwed.

I did write to Rockstar with the problem, but I don't expect they'll ever reply. I really liked the game, too! Guess I'll have to wait for GOG to release the game, and maybe they'll have one DRM- and bug-free?!

I don't like the way MP3 creates "saves" but it is what it is. It seems my 3 choices are... restart the game from scratch; replay the PREVIOUS Chapter (the one in the sports stadium) and see if things get better from there; or just replay the level with the water tank. I've done that 3rd one, so maybe if I go much further back? Maybe something got bugged between this chapter and the previous one?

I wish I was just "doing something wrong" but I don't think it's that complicated. I think you just have to be "fast" and the gamepad makes it very easy.
