Speaking of Office, how the bleeding fuck do Microsoft justify £300 for a single user Professional license? That's ridiculous. MS has no competitors in the office apps arena so they can charge whatever they want. Windows has to compete against Mac and Linus so the price is lower. They were practically giving Win 7 away to students for $30 during that sale.

Because you use Publisher? Or Access? Or even Outlook to it's full potential (integration with Exchange server)? Heck, I even doubt you use OneNote.
Considering that most people only use Word and PowerPoint then yes, the Office Home and Student for $150 (that's without university discount for example) is more than enough. Heck, you even get 3 fucking licenses for 150 so get two more friends and split the price.
If you really need databases (lol at Access), Exchange integration and publishing capabilities then you better pony up the money. Development for those things isn't cheap.

Giganto Corp doesn't pay the $300 either; any reasonably-sized business can get heavily discounted Microsoft software via volume licensing or Software Assurance; the latter includes the ability to upgrade to newer versions for no extra cost for the duration of your contract, and for both plans the per-system price goes down as the total number of systems covered goes up.
If you have business-level software needs but don't qualify for either of the above you'll need to pay for it.
