How long until we hear of another dev studio starting with the IW escapees?
"Hellgate of Duty in development by former Infinity Ward members!"

Hah that made me chuckle.
Best of luck to them, hope they get employed elsewhere in the gaming industry and put their talents to good use in making some quality games.
The morale at Infinity Ward must be absolutely dreadful.

Isn't that the level of morale that Bobby aspires to keep people at?
The dudes at IW are rebels, you just can't stop their rebellious rockstar antics. Because if I recall correctly, IW was formed from disgruntled ex-developers of the company who made the Medal of Honor series.

I think it would be more accurate to lay the blame for their 'antics' at the feet of the publishers concerned. After all, most people don't like working 80 hour weeks for months on end and having their pay withheld. If you can get a better job at a fast food joint then there's probably not much point in sticking around.
I've been subscribing to Retro Gamer for a few months now and read tons of interviews of people who made games "back in the days" (i.e. 1980s and early 1990s) and they ALL mention the same thing:
When publishers interfere with a game, it's BAD.
I already believed, for years, that small developers could make better games that have more "soul" and these interviews confirm that. The success to a great game is a smallish team with a vision. They won't mind doing long hours, they'll be driven to create a great game and they'll do things their way. Many if not most of the best games in our history were created that way. Syndicate Wars, Monkey Island, Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, Dizzy ( love those), Civilization, etc. etc. Heck, even Deus Ex was made by a relatively small core team which is why the game had such a strong focus. But when you get these massive developing companies which are put under immense pressure by publishers on top of the chaos, then you'll find that few games released this way feel unique because there's no shared focus, no shared vision. Everyone does his bit and the result is that it all feels pretty generic.
No wonder so many indie games feel like a breath of fresh air: new and original approaches, amazing artwork and lots of love and passion pumped into them. I can totally see why people leave and want to start their own studio - it must be great to get to do your own thing again.
So what does activision have? Not counting blizzard and their games.
Guitar hero is dead from what i heard. too many games and market is completely saturated.
MW2 and COD was their biggest franchises but without IW a new company has to make it. Only one desperate for contract will accept it seeing what happened to IW (which should be swimming with cash but it is not) and that means high probability of failure. Even power of the brand won't help as people in gaming market do care about studios.
what other franchises they have? any new projects or developers with great track record?
Then the indies hit it big and want to go mainstream. And it's Actiblizzard again. :D

I guess the problem is when they want to get the game to the masses they have to go back to the people where thier problem started.

That's the way publishers do it: they milk every decent idea until it's dead and people are tired of it. Then they blame piracy for the dropping sales and come up with a new series which is slightly worse than the previous so the sales drop even faster.

At which point the publisher takes control, all creativity is sucked out of the current project, the game bombs, some people are fired and developers start leaving in droves to start a new independent studio, and then the circle is complete.

Independent and mobile development is where it's at. Agreed 100% -- big is bad. I'd take a hit in graphics if it meant a healthy industry. It's really not that important. Hm, Valve and Stardock are good examples of this. They're all about "creative design" -- I don't know about Valve's stuff, but Elemental I believe is made by a relatively small team.
Of course, the other solution is publishers just act sensible. I feel EA is a good example of this. DICE and BioWare for example seem very happy under them.
