delboy2k10: I had the A1000 which was 256mb but had the 256Mb upgrade making it 512mb which to be honest you really had to have for Multitasking.
superstande: Yeah you mean 256kb..?
I don't know much of A1000, but on my A500 there was 512kb as a starter-memory... then the trend was to double it.
SOMEHOW doubt you had 512 megabytes back in the day :)
Obvious typo but yeah LOL
The A500 was the 2nd gen being as the A100 looked like a business PC and was the queen of the commodore expo show for multitasking machines
Same architecture just about, minor few revisions
The 1mb A500 came about due to games graphics getting higher and higher and in my opinion sloppy programing.
If you look at Elite Frontier (not a great game and bugged) it was 2 disks and filled in vector graphics - look at wing commander - 8 disks +, textured graphics, smaller universe.
ORIGIN I believe forced us to CD quickly, and that's not a bad thing, but the age of innovation game design where pacman could be written in 8kb - 16kb of memory were well gone - It went to visuals for 70% of games.
