aymerict: I think this is very clever of Microsoft on the contrary. It is not so easy to switch to another software when you have a lot of contacts on Skype, because there is no inter-operability between Skype and other services. I use Skype with Linux too and I am worried that the already slow development process for Linux versions will be stopped by Microsoft.

GameRager: If anything it'll speed up, but half the new updates will just be security fixes to fix security holes MS "accidentally" puts in the new versions.
I hope you're right, after all there is money to be made from Linux users too.

Why? Going back to their old roots of buying out the competition? Windows Live Messenger is a messy mass of adverts and useless extras nowadays. I much prefer to use the built in windows messenger on older operating systems like XP but with 7 I'm stuck with the latest version.

Wondeful... hopefully the better features will come to Windows Live. :love:

I'd love being able to talk with my contacts for free... Since I'll be able to send them messages for free starting from September. Yay for Mango update! :)

Microsoft is planning on ramping up the amount of advertising free users of Skype see while they are making video calls and using the rest of the service.

Skype is excellent as long as it's free. There are enough alternatives to go to. The technology is not exactly a secret. I don't see MicroSoft making big money with Skype.

Thanks Lone3wolf for pointing me here.

I worry about that if MS does get a hold on Skype, they'll start to kill off the other platforms performance or all together the other platforms. This would again force users to go Windows or bust. I like Skype as it allows a wide range of platforms to use it. Being a Mac user this does worry me a little. However. If MS does leave it alone well enough and use their manpower and money to better improve it for all platforms. I would have no problems then.

It'll be interesting to see if skype replaces xbox live chat or becomes a seperate program. If the latter I suspect it'd end up like netflix and require live gold (and probably, like netflix, not be available to australians)

*shrug* mumble is free.

kinda sucks that we will be losing one of the better VOIP offerings for direct phone calls, I have no doubt that M$ will devour skype and jack up the prices while throttling back features.

being a monopoly is not illegal exploiting it in certain ways however is.

Also note this announcement was made the day before DOJ interference with MS ends, from today MS is no longer being watched and is free to do things like bundle its anti virus etc with windows.
