Red_Avatar: It's really a disgusting country morally - and they can't blame the West for that - it's greed and nothing but greed.

WhiteElk: You want to talk about disgusting greed? Lets talk about the Cochabamba Water Wars of 2000 and how western greed has gone so far as to claim ownership over the rain. The world bank required Bolivia to privatize it's water services. A western multi-national corporation took over municipal water districts. They drastically raised the price of water. The working poor couldn't afford it so they harvested their own. The corporation didn't want mother nature competing with them, so they pushed the government to make the harvesting of water illegal. People went to jail for catching the rain! Those who couldn't pay their water bill, had their homes and assets seized on behalf of the company. These are hardworking people whose local economy cannot provide incomes that meet the basic cost of living. A cost of living raised by western greed.

Well of course the people wouldn't take it! They organized and politicked the legal way. But the resources of the western company was too great. Their need for profit superseded the peoples need of life sustaining water. So naturally the people rioted and shut the city down. Many people died, and many suffered horribly. Imagine being so greedy that you'd rather people die of thirst than catch the rain which falls from the sky!

I was surprised to learn that in some states in the US, it is also illegal to harvest your own rainwater. This makes sense to me when the practice is of such a scale that it affects watersheds. But this isn't about that. Even in my rainsoaked coastal region, I'd have to compete with big companies for the water rights to collect the rain which flows into my raingutters and off to sea. Bah!

There is much much more could be said about the ill effects of western greed and depravity. But this rainwater thing astounds me. But reading posts like yours really pisses me off! The Nigerians are not genetically inferior to you. Your race commits atrocity and causes human suffering on a far greater scale than they. //
You're talking about corporations and governments, I'm talking about regular people. Governements are always shit - look around the world. They protect their own interests and always have. The people are supposed to have the moral high ground and be more ethical than its thieving and corrupt politicians.

Nigerian scams (which account for billions of $) are said to be very wide spread through their culture - tens of thousands (if not more) who live on ripping off regular people - that, in my eyes, is worse than a government doing shit because, while you can kick a government out, getting rid of a bad moral mentality in a country is much harder. The extent of their lies is baffling and the total lack of guilt when they scam even the poorest of their money ... it's utterly disgusting. A few years back, a lady with a very ill husband fell for the scam, told the scammers how much she needed the money to pay for the medical bills, and that didn't stop them from taking every penny from her - don't compare that to shit like that. This is the greed of corporations (which are greedy by default) vs regular people.

Neither was I lying when I said that Caucasian workers get kidnapped all the time - the father of a friend of mine was asked to work there as engineer, fixing up old equipment from Europe and shipping it there, teaching the people locally how to use it. Every week, some fellow European from region he lived in got kidnapped and usually more than one. They got letters with guidelines when they were moving about: never go out alone, with at least 3 people, call ahead when you're going somewhere, etc. If you got kidnapped, the authorities do nothing - that's another thing: if you get screwed, they just shrug. It's money in their economy, so they're happy.

Red_Avatar: Nigerians seem to have a certain genetic trait that makes their conscience go totally crazy and blow up before they're 5 years old. If you see all the scams they pull, all the honest people whose lives they screw up ... it's disgusting. Nigeria is also very very dangerous to work in - a lot of Caucasian workers get kidnapped for ransom. It's really a disgusting country morally - and they can't blame the West for that - it's greed and nothing but greed.
Recently the oil spill in the gulf of Mexico made headlines, at least in the USA. Imagine that happening on land for decades, that has been going on over there. Google "ogoni" for the story, it is well-known. All so people like me can have cheaper oil, yay.

It isn't like the west was never plagued by corrupt government, slavery, genocide, and so on. Even recently the USA was torturing people using officially approved techniques. We like to take the recent enlightenment of the west for granted, yet often it seems to me to be as precarious as an intoxicated tightrope walker on an endless rope. Any part of the west could end up like Nigeria in a hundred years. It isn't like parts of the world have never before been enlightened only to lose it, democracy and science are not recent inventions you know.

Oh, that's different! Must be rotten genetics. It is not like Caucasians have ever been known to kidnap people of other races.
Sorry but I gotta go, I think the sarcasm is clogging up my computer vents D:

This isn't unique to Nigeria, I know they're a favorite whipping boy and all, but it's pretty hypocritical to single them out. The rest of the bigoted trash in this thread about genetics and morality... seriously guys, you aren't special snowflakes for being born outside of abject poverty and permanently being fucked; desperate people who can never have anything do shitty stuff, it's not unique to race, gender, gender preference or anything else.

So get off your moral high horse and think about ways to eliminate poverty worldwide (at least this level of poverty). It's a condemnation of the entire human race that anyone lives that way at this point, not a condemnation of a specific people with slightly different genes and national history from you.

Again, it's because it's the news now.....wait until someone else fucks something up enough to get worldwide coverage and then they will be the bullseye target.;

I don't get the point of this argument. You're basically describing almost every big corporation in existence anywhere in the world. It's just the definition of "scam" that might vary. I can understand it happening much more in Nigeria (and underdeveloped countries in general) simply due to lacking law enforcement, but applying genetics to such an argument was downright racist.

Here in Brazil, tourists are advised never to walk alone, for they are preferred prey to robbers and kidnappers. Now, I'm giving you the chance to call me and other 190 million Brazilians genetic criminals. Go ahead, do it.

You can't judge a whole population by it's criminals. Crime appears when there is opportunity, and is much raised when there is need, which is much more likely in poorer countries, that is a fact. But if you think you are superior, just research what happens every time the police goes on strike, anywhere.

Dragobr: Crime appears when there is opportunity
One nitpick, crime actually grows very quickly when there is very little opportunity for a large subset of a population. Crime doesn't just show up when there's opportunity for crime, it shows up when there's very little opportunity outside of criminal activity.

I see your point, and it's almost exactly the same as mine. As I said after that, when there really is need for crime (which should be equivalent to being very little opportunity outside it), there will be lots of it.

Still, even if at a smaller scale, there probably will be crime where there is opportunity for it, even if there is no real need. For many, it seems like an easier path than just being a honest worker.

Yes, this is true, but for some it isn't about it being easier rather than there being virtually or literally no other choice.....due to things like lack of experience, lack of jobs, bad economy causing layoffs everywhere, etc.

Yes, I agree. I said that "Crime appears when there is opportunity" because not *all* of it comes from need. But I understand that most of it does.

Well, at least concerning financially motivated crimes.

New low? This kind of stuff happens in a lot of African and Southeast Asian countries. Probably in other places too.
I don't know what's more shocking, that these kind of crimes happens or that people actually think the genetics is the reason for them? If genetics was a big reason to criminality then Australia would be catastrophe and chaos if you look into their "imported criminals" history. Nuff said..
On one hand, it gives me an idea, for an evil economy game, where You sell kids, scam people and bribe the authorities. On the other side, makes me want to play a Jagged Alliance in Nigeria.
Africa got the problem that the continent jumped too quickly to the "imperial age" when they were used as colonies. Before being used as soldiers and slaves (yes, even the ones that wasn't labeled as one) by imperialistic industrialized countries the Africans lived in simple tribe communities. During that conversion the communities learned the way to success was utter greed and slavery. Sadly it's still is a strong mentality in many African societies and will live on for a while.

Ever even thought why Africa is divided in squares and why there is so many weapons?
Rich western people divided the African people simply by drawing lines on a paper and without consideration of how the tribes "nations" looked like. After that they provided their newly created countries with firepower and had them fighting like a game of chess. Those weapons are still around and with the old tribe mentality still around they often get used for genocides and other kinds abuse.

I already tried to be an evil dictator in Tropico, and I sucked at it.

[joke] It takes balls to be a prick [/joke] ;)
Try the third one, i couldn't get through the clunkyness of the first two [though i've approached them for the first time after finishing T3]. It's fairly easy. Can't wait for Tropico 4.

Though, as politically and morally incorect such a game would be, there already is one, and it's popular. A board game called Puerto Rico, where You use "colonists" for labour. And they come on ships, and they work for free, and they're represented by little, round, brown tokens.
The expansion adds a building called "Black Market" where You have to pay for the "colonists" [as far as i remember], and the building has a picture with 2 black hands in shackles.

[disclaimer:]
No, i do not condone slavery, sex trade, rape, murder, etc. When faced with news about such events, i fail my "live and let live" check.

African were already warlike before Europeans got there to screw them up even worse.
We didn't make tribes go to war and take slaves, they were already doing that. We just bought the slaves they already had, which of course encouraged tribes to try to get more.
That just created a high tolerance for violence that unfortunately still exists today.

As for the colonial era, we did divide them up into countries very stupidly, but they certainly weren't encouraged to make war on each other. Their weapons mostly come from weapons dealers and the USSR in the case of former communist countries.

Blaming colonist countries for everything that's wrong with Africa now is a cop-out imo. Other countries were colonized by Europeans in other parts of the word and they're not nearly so bad violence and crime-wise.
