Wow... I'm surprised at how little interest I see on GOG for Privateer and Privateer 2. Those two games are among the most-talked about and most-played games on the PC. A good copy of "PV2: The Darkening" goes for close to $100 on eBay, but nobody votes for it on GOG's wishlist?
Well, I guess there isn't as much of an audience for Privateer as I thought....

I see well over 300 votes for it. That doesn't seem like nobody to me. The games do have multiple entries in the wishlist (like "Wing Commander: Privateer 2" and "Privateer 2: The Darkening"), so you might need to combine totals to get true numbers.
There are few fan remakes of the first Privateer:
Wing Commander : Privateer Gemini Gold is probably the best of them. It's Standalone remake of Original WC: Privateer and it's expansion Righteous Fire made using Vega Strike game engine. It's considered more faitfull remake of WC:P than Privateer Remake. Development is still ongoing and game is currently at version 1.02a and available for Windows, Mac and Linux.
Wing Commander: Privateer Remake (Note! Site is currently down) was also a remake of WC:P using Vega Strike Engine and it's expansion but added some new features purists did not like (and thus, IIRC, Gemini Gold was born). I'm not entirely sure what happened but the home page of the project has been down for quite a while now and development halted couple years back with release of the version 1.2 in 2005. You can still download it from Wing Commander Universe Project page at Souceforge and it's available for Windows, Linux and Mac.
There's also an fan modification of WC:PR called Parallel Universe that seeks to expand the playability of the game by introducing new ships, rebalancing certain aspects and adding new campaigns. Game is still in development and as far as I can see, you have to build it from source to play it.
Privateer: Ascii Sector is well... a ASCII graphics (You know Rogue, Nethack and the like) remake of the game. It's still in development currently at version 0.4.5.1 and available for Windows, Mac and Linux.
I've already voted for Privateer 2. I still have those discs somewhere. Been trying to get it to run reliably for the longest time via Dosbox.

Right:
1) Copy everything from Disk One to C:Dark
2) Go to
http://originalthp.solsector.net/privateer2win95/
and download the patch.
3) Extract all the files in patch to C:Dark
4) run DARK.EXE
Only problem I am having is getting Options up with ALT-O. But that may only come up when in flight or something.
Hope this helps, despite the minus 1 I got for my last post!
