I recently bought a tablet, going for a hand-held portable device while travelling, thus forsaking playing GOG-games on a netbook while sitting in a train. But to my joy I've just found out, I can play GOG-games on my Android tablet if they're adventure games running in the ScummVM engine emulator (or whatever the proper technical term is).

So now I've found a good use for the free GOG-give away games Behind a Steel Sky, Lure of the Temptress and Broken Sword. I've never given much thought to adventure games, but suddenly they come out of Pandora's Box as wonderful casual games for playing while travelling. I've just tried out Lure of the Temptress and with the ScummVM-app, it's like the game was made to play on tablet (http://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/Android/Guide).

So my question is: what are you're favourite ScummVM games and which one would be worth buying, when I would want even more GOG-games on my tablet?

Don't have an Android phone or tablet, but i found ya this:P

I'm having a blast with Broken Sword 1 on my tablet.

Also, the Blackwell Bundle and Resonance are made with the AGS game engine, which has an unofficial Android port. Builds are here: http://jjs.at/daily/ Grab the latest .apk file.

The AGS install procedure is the same as for ScummVM: Install game on PC, copy game files to the right directory on tablet I'm playing the free King's Quest 1 remake with it and having a good time.
Not tested, but I would say from the games that can run with scummvm I would recommend the first two Simon the Sorcerer games and of course Broken Sword 2. On the scummvm download-page there are with Drascula and Flight of the Amazon Queen two another free games. Flight of the Amazon Queen should also work fine on the tablet and is except the voices (only know the german version) a solid game. While most older Sierra games can run with scummvm I believe they are very uncomfortable for newbies, also the controls on a tablet is very likely not very handy. Best games for scummvm were of course the original scumm games from LucasArts, but beware of that the versions sold on steam are not functional with scummvm.
The first 3 Monkey Island games all work well. GOG-wise though, I hear you can run Myst and Riven through ScummVM. I haven't done it, but maybe you could give that a go?
Just asked a buddy of mine, he says he can play the King's Quest, Space Quest and Tex Murphy games on his Android tablet.
Myst and River are in progress for a long time now but not workable yet. More details about the status of engines and games you will find here.

Edit: Must correct myself, regarding my own linked page both games are playable, but need some tweaking. You need the latest svn testverion for it. Looking at that list maybe also the Gobliiins (more puzzle games) would be also interesting for you. Also the TeeAgent from GOG seems to work, which means another free game for you.

Tnanks for all your replies. My question though, is not (just) about what games could be played, but what actually are fun to play and I'd like to know why you like them as well. So I'm most interested in answers from people who've played any of these games:

games with Complete Engines in the Latest Stable Version: that are available on GOG:

(agi:): King's Quest 1+2+3, Space Quest 1+2

(agos:) Simon the Sorceror, Simon the Sorceror 2, the feeble files, waxworks

(sci:) Police Quest 1+2+3, King's Quest 4+5+6, Quest for Glory 1-5

(gob:) Gobliiins 1+2+ 3

(groovie:) The 7the Guest

(made:) Manhole

(teenagent:) Teenagent

With your recommendations I'm willing to know: Which games have you actually played and liked and why did you like them?
Space Quest 1 and 2 (ok, and 3) were my favorite classic sierra adventure games. I loved their setting and puzzles and references, and antihero.

King's quest was my first graphic adventure game, it has nostalgia value, but I never really got into that series.

Quest for Glory was awesome, merging classic sierra adventure gaming with RPG aspects, it's still hard to classify. I'd advise it, but not as a pure adventure game. There are fights, stats, etc.

Gobliiins are fun, but are more puzzle games than adventure games. Each screen is a "level", a puzzle to solve. It's fun and hard, because of its deliberately twisted cartoonish logic.

I loved the Police Quest series, but expect something boring. It's very procedurial, you're supposed to play a by-the-rules cop, and follow all procedures closely, so it feels a bit like a formation game. But that's what sets it apart, this weird mundane realism, and the consequences of errors that give their meanings to the rules.

Simon the Sorcerer 1 is classic fun. Rates slightly below Monkey Island, but has strong fourth-wall-breaking humour, it's a nice parody of fantasy and adventure games. It was very highly regarded at the time. And the puzzles are decent. I played it recently, and i had more fun with it than with the other "classics" that I was catching up on (I was disappointed with "Flight of the Amazon Queen", for instance).

So, for classic adventure, Space Quest and Simon are the safest, I'd say. If you want more epic, more ambitious gameplay, Quest for Glory are perfect.

(Some say Waxworks is great, but I never played it.)

You forgot the Broken Sword games ;-) Okay, some more details.

Broken Sword Series: They have a very good story and nice puzzles, easy to play. You can die, but it's not so hard or irrational like the Sierra games.

Kings Quest Series: Hate-love for me, but pure nostaliga and very oldschool. You will die often and mostly for not reasonably reasons. Also many puzzles are made to be hard and not necessary logical. You need to save (different savegames recommended) and reload very often. Rough but still with charm would be a good description for them They are still fun to play, but I would not recommend them for newbies. At some point you need exact controls, that can maybe very hard on a tablet. The later games are more user friendly, so if you still interested and focus on 5 to 6 first.

Space Quest Series: Great humour. They focus more on humour, but they have the same problems like the Kings Quest games. Nothing more to say here.

Police Quest Series: Never got into them, but only played the first one. They are made from a cop and you need exactly check every little thing. If you didn't checked the car before driving, game over. If you forgot something else (check your equipment), game over. I really hated that.

Quest for Glory: Unique mix between adventure and role-playing games, offering you different ways to solve problems.

About the Sierra games itself: I don't know how the situation is with the copy-protection. While many cracked games work in DosBox ScummVM has some still activated. That can be a little bit unhandy for a portable device.

Gobliins Series: They are more puzzles with a story. They are funny, but if you more interested in a story take a focus on the other series.

Simon the Sorcerer Series: As someone wrote they have the same spirit like the LucasArts games. Simon often reminds me on Guybrush. The humour is fine and the story ok. Puzzles aren't hard, so highly recommended for a newbie.

7thGuest: Very puzzle-oriented. Personally I'm more a story-based person and didn't liked it. Also the movement-animations really annoyed me (too slow for me).

Flight of the Amazon Queen: Story is decent, often feels like a cheap Indiana Jones. The voices in the german version are kind of annoying. Though it can still be fun to play and it's free, so no problem to give it a run.

Thanks again.

Quest for Glory sounds like fun. It's would be some kind of compensation for not being able to play real RPG's on my tablet (all RPG's on the Android market are MMORPG's).

Simon the Sorceror sounds like fun to. As I'm such a newbie with this genre, I'll stay away from King's Quest for now.

BTW, I didn't mention Broken Sword as I already own it, as it was a free offer not a long time ago. I will definitely try it and if I finish the game and I like it, I might buy Broken Sword 2.

A missing piece of the puzzle of games available here on GOG seem to be the LucasArts game. I've heard enthusiasm about the Tales of the Monkey Island. Does anyone know if it can be bought elsewhere or are we all waiting for GOG to sell it?

Yes, it seems Quest for Glory seems the best fit for you, also it's a great bundle for that price. Tales of the Monkey Island is the remake-series from Telltale. It has an episodic format and is also fun to play. As far as I know Telltale sells only some of their games also for the iPad, but not Android. To find working versions from LucasArts games for scummvm you have only two options - search for overpriced used copies or visit the dark places on the internet. The games are re-released on steam, but these versions don't work with scummvm. If you want a classical rpg there is an android version of Avadon , it was released in one of the an Humble Indie Anroid Bundles.

I'm not a big adventure fan, but i strongly recommend the first 2 Simon the Sorceror games. They're excellent.
I tried to run GOG games on ScummVM on Android but none of them is recognized.
I always get the error "ScummVM could not find any game in the specified directory!".

I tried it with
- Simon the Sorcerer
- Gobliiins Pack
- Gabriel Knight

I have installed the following plugins:
- scumm
- sci
- agos
- agi

Thanks for your help.
@torusJKL:

What you need to do, is:

1. install the games on your PC.
2. make a folder with the name of the game inside a SCUMMVM games folder on your tablet.
3. make sure you have 'show hidden files and folders' and 'show system files' enabled on your PC,
4. copy all content of the game folder on your PC to the game folder on your tablet.
5. Finally, in ScummVM, select 'add game' and point ScummVM to the folder where you put your game data.
for ease, you might to check what ScummVM's default game folder and putting the game in that one in step 2.

For creating a game folder, you'll need to have a file explorer app capable of making new folders.

edit:

Again everybody thanks for your recommendations. I just bought Quest for Glory in the sales right now.
